Ashford Borough Council has launched a cutting-edge AI compliance and document verification system at the Ashford Port Health Authority, aimed at automating the initial stage of import checks at the Sevington Border Control Post. The initiative seeks to streamline the entry of food and regulated goods into the UK.
The system, which utilizes Intelligent Document Processing, is designed to automatically extract, structure, and evaluate import documentation for agricultural products and other regulated goods. This innovation significantly reduces the need for manual review during the early screening stages, thereby enhancing efficiency in the import process.
Officials have described the AI system as the first of its kind in the UK to fully automate initial documentary compliance checks for imported goods. This includes products of animal origin (POAO), high-risk food not of animal origin (HRFNAO), and other regulated consignments. The new technology mimics the workflows of human officers, improving productivity, consistency, and the speed of border controls while enabling staff to concentrate on frontline services.
The rollout of this advanced technology also allows Ashford Borough Council to maintain official control charges at their current levels for the 2026/27 financial year, as the efficiencies gained through automation offset financial pressures. Council representatives have emphasized that the AI system is meant to augment, rather than replace, expert oversight, thus bolstering compliance without compromising professional judgment.
As the demand for efficient border control mechanisms continues to rise, this initiative at Ashford Port Health Authority could set a precedent for similar systems across the UK, potentially influencing how import processes are managed nationwide. The implementation also highlights the growing role of AI in regulatory frameworks, showcasing its potential to facilitate smoother operations in critical areas such as food safety and public health.
