Tripura unveils India's first state-level AI policy to enhance smart city management, supported by Niti Aayog, aiming to revolutionize local governance and innovation.

Agartala: Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that Tripura will roll out India’s first state-level Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, with support from Niti Aayog and the Atal Innovation Mission. The announcement was made during the launch of the State Innovation Mission in the capital city, Agartala. The initiative aims to harness AI-driven solutions for the management of smart city projects, focusing specifically on traffic regulation, parking oversight, electricity distribution, provision of drinking water, flood control, waste management, and property evaluation.

During the launch, Saha underscored the state government’s commitment to implementing advanced technologies to streamline services and improve governance. He also shared plans to establish a Tripura AI Centre of Excellence, supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This center is expected to play a pivotal role in fostering innovation and developing local talent in the tech sector.

In addition to the AI Centre, the government is preparing to create a Tripura IT and Data Economic Zone along with an IT park that will provide co-working spaces, aiming to bolster the IT, IT-enabled services (ITES), and data center ecosystem within the state. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to promote digital governance and administrative reforms, according to Saha.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the upcoming AI policy signifies a major milestone in enhancing the state’s innovation framework. He highlighted Tripura’s achievement of reaching a fully paperless operation across all levels of governance, which includes the cabinet, state secretariat, village councils, and gram panchayats. This transition to digital platforms has significantly improved the transparency and efficiency of administrative processes.

In his remarks, Saha pointed out that the mission aligns with the goals of Niti Aayog’s State Support Mission, which is designed to assist states and Union Territories in cultivating localized innovation ecosystems tailored to their specific strengths. The intention is to create an environment conducive to innovation that leverages the unique attributes and resources of Tripura.

As the state gears up to implement its AI policy, industry experts believe this pioneering move could set a precedent for other states in India. The emphasis on smart city initiatives and the establishment of dedicated technology centers might attract investment and talent to Tripura, positioning it as a significant player in the country’s digital transformation journey.

The introduction of the AI policy also marks a critical moment for Tripura, which has long been striving to enhance its technological landscape. By integrating AI into public services, the government aims to not only improve operational efficiencies but also to address pressing local challenges. This forward-thinking approach is expected to resonate well with the tech-savvy younger population and entrepreneurs, potentially igniting a wave of innovation.

Overall, the launch of Tripura’s AI policy signals a commitment to embracing the future of technology. As states across India consider similar initiatives, the effectiveness of Tripura’s implementation will be closely watched and could serve as a model for others looking to enhance their own innovation ecosystems.
