Cornell Tech Secures $7M from NASA and Schmidt Sciences to Modernize arXiv Platform

Cornell Tech secures $7M from NASA and Schmidt Sciences to modernize arXiv, enhancing cloud infrastructure and discovery tools for over 2.8M research papers.

Cornell Tech has secured over $7 million in funding from NASA and Schmidt Sciences to revamp arXiv, the prominent open-access research repository that currently houses more than 2.8 million scientific papers. The funding aims to accelerate arXiv’s transition to cloud infrastructure, modernize its aging codebase, and develop enhanced recommendation tools for researchers to discover relevant preprints more efficiently.

Greg Morrisett, the Jack and Rilla Neafsey dean and vice provost of Cornell Tech, emphasized that this support is crucial for scaling the platform to meet the increasing demands of the global research community. He described the funding as a vital investment in the long-term sustainability of arXiv.

Ramin Zabih, arXiv’s executive director and a professor of computer science at Cornell Tech, highlighted that the repository is undergoing a significant technological transformation. The grants will enable the team to finalize the migration without service disruptions while exploring improved discovery and access tools.

The contribution from Schmidt Sciences will bolster arXiv’s engineering capacity, facilitating the completion of this modernization effort. Meanwhile, NASA’s grant will focus on research aimed at creating fairer and more effective search and recommendation capabilities, as well as expanding arXiv’s reach into fields aligned with the agency’s priorities, such as planetary science.

James Ricci, director of science systems at Schmidt Sciences, expressed enthusiasm for assisting arXiv in its move to scalable cloud infrastructure to meet rising global demand, citing the platform as a crucial driver of open science.

Founded in 1991 by physicist Paul Ginsparg, arXiv has evolved into a widely utilized repository encompassing a variety of disciplines, including physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, and finance, among others. The latest grants join ongoing support from the Simons Foundation, academic libraries, universities, professional societies, and individual donors, ensuring that arXiv remains a pivotal resource in the scientific community.

As arXiv embarks on this substantial upgrade, the enhancements are expected to improve accessibility and foster greater collaboration across various fields of research. The initiative highlights the growing recognition of the importance of open-access platforms in an increasingly digital and interconnected research landscape.
