LG AI Research Institute Launches Next-Gen VLM ‘Experts 4.5’ for Humanoid Robots

LG Uplus and LG AI Research Institute unveil Exemplar 4.5, a next-gen VLM that enhances humanoid robots’ perception, aiming for world-class AI performance.

BARCELONA, Spain — LG Uplus and the LG AI Research Institute unveiled their new cooperative framework during a press conference on March 1, 2026, a day before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026. The initiative, dubbed the “One-Team” system, aims to leverage advanced AI technologies to enhance their business operations and address real-world challenges.

At the center of this collaboration is the release of the next-generation non-verbal model (VLM), referred to as Exemplar 4.5. This model is designed to enable humanoid robots to interpret visual information in a manner similar to humans. Unlike traditional language models focused solely on text, Exemplar 4.5 acts as an “eye,” allowing robots to perceive their environments and make informed decisions.

Lim Woo-hyung, President of the LG AI Research Institute, emphasized the importance of creating AI that delivers tangible value beyond mere technical advancement. He stated, “We will focus on creating AI that creates real value in the real world beyond the stage of artificial intelligence conversion.” Lim highlighted that the Exemplar 4.5 model aims to achieve world-class performance among open-weight models, positioning it as the core intelligence for South Korean humanoid robots.

Last year, LG Electronics partnered with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) to develop a Korean AI humanoid robot named KAPEX, which is set to utilize Exemplar 4.5 as its cognitive engine. The advanced capabilities of this model are expected to enhance KAPEX’s functionality and interaction with its surroundings.

In addition to the humanoid robot initiatives, LG Uplus plans to incorporate VLM technology into its AI call agent, Exio Pro. This AI is intended to transition from a passive assistant to an active agent that proactively meets customer needs. At MWC 2026, LG Uplus showcased Exio Pro’s potential to serve as a “voice-based super agent,” capable of engaging with customers across various settings, including homes, offices, and vehicles, while transcending traditional smartphone limitations.

Lee Sang-yeop, Chief Technology Officer of LG Uplus, elaborated on the strategic vision of their AI technology, asserting that the aim is to create an “ambient AI agent” capable of connecting multiple devices seamlessly. He explained the necessity of establishing a low-cost, Korean-specific model that effectively addresses client issues, reiterating the significance of collaboration with the LG AI Research Institute in achieving this goal.

As part of this effort, LG Uplus is also working on enhancing its infrastructure to support a robust AI ecosystem. The Paju AI Data Center (AIDC), set to be completed by 2027, is expected to be a substantial facility with a capacity of 200 MW and room for 120,000 graphics processing units (GPUs). This center will enable the efficient operation of real-time physical AI services, which are vital for the advancement and low-latency requirements of Exemplar technologies.

The integration of Exemplar 4.5 within LG Uplus’s service offerings is indicative of a broader trend in the telecommunications sector, where companies are investing heavily in AI to remain competitive. The partnership between LG Uplus and the LG AI Research Institute underscores their commitment to pioneering innovations in physical AI, aiming to create intelligent systems that can autonomously understand and navigate real-world environments.

As these developments unfold, the implications for the future of AI and robotics are profound, potentially reshaping various industries. LG’s strategic initiatives position it at the forefront of the intersection between artificial intelligence and physical applications, paving the way for smarter, more responsive technology in everyday life.
