TCU Launches $10M AI² Initiative with Dell to Expand AI Research and Education

Texas Christian University launches $10M AI² initiative with Dell to enhance secure AI research and education, aiming for Carnegie R1 status and broader community impact

Texas Christian University (TCU) has announced a $10 million initiative called AI² aimed at enhancing secure AI research computation, bolstering interdisciplinary research, and preparing students for an increasingly AI-driven workforce. This investment is part of TCU’s broader strategy to achieve Research One (R1) status, the highest classification in the Carnegie system, and includes contributions from major technology partners such as Dell Technologies, AWS, and Microsoft.

In a statement, TCU Chancellor Daniel W. Pullin emphasized the transformative impact of AI, stating, “AI isn’t just changing the rate of learning and the landscape of higher education; it’s making history.” The university intends to leverage this technology to enhance educational outcomes, improve operational efficiency, and significantly expand its research contributions to the community.

The AI² initiative will utilize a hybrid infrastructure model that merges secure on-campus computing with cloud capabilities. This setup allows sensitive data to remain local while accommodating more flexible workloads in the cloud. TCU’s Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Floyd Wormley, noted that AI-driven initiatives are already flourishing across campus, and this new funding will enable responsible scaling of these efforts.

“The volume of AI-driven work and research on campus currently is impressive,” Wormley remarked. He underscored the importance of the initiative in supporting various academic units and empowering community members to use emerging AI tools in alignment with the university’s mission. The project’s on-campus foundation will integrate the Dell AI Factory and deploy NVIDIA AI Enterprise software, along with open Nemotron models designed to optimize operational processes.

According to Jennifer Herbert, head of public sector sales in North America for Dell Technologies, the project serves as a blueprint for how higher education institutions can implement AI securely and at scale. “TCU researchers and students will be enabled to explore new frontiers in ethical AI, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and drive meaningful impact across their campus and beyond,” she stated.

The AI infrastructure encompasses Dell PowerEdge servers equipped with NVIDIA GPUs, NVIDIA Spectrum-X Ethernet networking, and Dell PowerScale storage. TCU has already begun hardware installation, with pilot activity expected to commence before the end of the calendar year. A full campus rollout is slated for January.

AI² aims to centralize and accelerate AI activities across various academic departments, transforming previously siloed efforts into a cohesive institutional resource for research, teaching, and operational innovation. Reuben F. Burch V, vice provost for research and a professor of engineering, articulated the initiative’s potential to enhance interdisciplinary research partnerships and foster high-impact outcomes, stating that it will provide “a world-class tool” for faculty and students alike.

Burch further explained that AI² will significantly advance TCU’s strategic objectives by influencing faculty collaboration, student readiness, and the university’s pathway toward R1 status. A critical aspect of the initiative is the emphasis on ethical and practical applications of AI, which will be guided by faculty governance across four primary areas: using AI tools in teaching, conducting AI research, researching AI itself, and promoting responsible AI practices.

Bryan Lucas, reiterated that the investment transcends hardware and software, viewing it as a significant commitment to innovation and community impact. He added that the university plans to introduce additional tools and services in the upcoming months, including AI-focused learning certificates for students along with institutional tools to support teaching, research, and campus operations.

As TCU embarks on this expansive AI initiative, the university aims to set a precedent for how higher education can harness the power of artificial intelligence to not only enhance academic and operational frameworks but also to contribute meaningfully to the broader community.
