Alibaba has announced the launch of its new Qwen Consumer Business Group, a significant organizational shift aimed at enhancing consumer access to its artificial intelligence offerings. The division, led by Wu Jia, Alibaba’s vice president, will manage a variety of AI products, including the Qwen chatbot app, the Quark AI assistant and cloud drive, AI hardware products, the UC Browser, and the online reading platform Shuqi.

The newly formed unit’s primary objective is to transform the Qwen chatbot into a versatile “super app” that can be utilized across various platforms, including glasses, personal computers, and vehicles. The Qwen app, which is an updated version of the earlier Tongyi app, was relaunched in November 2022. The free and multifunctional Qwen app has already made a significant impact, achieving over 10 million downloads within its first week of public beta. This rapid uptake surpasses the early reception of ChatGPT and DeepSeek at their launches, according to Alibaba’s statements. The app is equipped to answer inquiries, transcribe audio, generate photos and videos, conduct research, and create slide decks, underscoring its versatility and appeal to a broad audience.
