Ferris State University Achieves NSA CAE Accreditation for Secure AI Program

Ferris State University becomes the first U.S. institution to earn NSA’s CAE accreditation for its secure AI program, addressing critical cybersecurity workforce needs.

Ferris State University has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first institution in the United States to receive validation from the National Security Agency (NSA) for its secure artificial intelligence (AI) program. This recognition comes in the form of a designation as a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Secure Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the program’s commitment to addressing the pressing security implications associated with AI technologies.

The CAE designation is an esteemed accreditation that encompasses various categories and now includes over 400 educational institutions nationwide. Schools that earn this designation, including others in Michigan like Grand Valley State University and Central Michigan University, gain a competitive advantage when it comes to securing grants, scholarships, and access to essential faculty development resources.

In addressing the importance of this achievement, Greg Gogolin, who manages Ferris State’s AI program, emphasized the program’s quality. “Artificial intelligence is having a transformative impact on our lives,” he remarked. “We’ve built a program that prepares students for public and private sector careers in an area where they can lead the focus on secure, ethical, and appropriate utilization of AI technology.”

Ferris State’s AI program, which is a Bachelor of Science degree, was developed in collaboration with industry leaders and has received support from the U.S. Department of War. This program is notable for being the second of its kind in the U.S., focusing on AI solutions across various sectors, including personal, household, transportation, and industrial applications. Students enrolled in the program can specialize in key areas such as cybersecurity, machine learning, and language processing, utilizing a secured AI lab for practical experience.

Renae Weathers, a CAE program manager at the NSA, pointed out the critical need for skilled professionals in the cybersecurity field, noting that Ferris State’s program directly addresses this “critical shortage.” She stated in a letter to Ferris State President Bill Pink, “A highly skilled cybersecurity workforce is a strategic national security advantage. The United States Government will continue to invest in and enhance programs that build the domestic talent pipeline, from primary through postsecondary education.”

The establishment of the secure AI program at Ferris State University underscores the increasing importance of cybersecurity in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. As AI technologies become more integrated into daily life and industry, the need for robust security measures has never been more urgent. This accreditation not only enhances the university’s reputation but also reflects a broader national effort to develop a workforce capable of tackling the complex security challenges posed by AI.

In summary, Ferris State University’s CAE designation in Secure Artificial Intelligence positions it at the forefront of AI education and cybersecurity training, fostering the next generation of responsible AI professionals equipped to navigate the complexities of both technology and security.
