Nvidia Secures Multiyear AI Chip Deal with Meta, Expanding CPU Footprint and Efficiency

Nvidia partners with Meta to deploy its new Rubin AI processors and Grace CPUs, aiming for 61% of revenue from major clients while enhancing efficiency.

Nvidia has announced a new agreement with Meta that incorporates its existing Blackwell chips and the upcoming Rubin AI processors, as well as standalone deployments of its Grace and Vera central processing units (CPUs). This move is strategic, as the Grace and Vera CPUs are designed to compete with offerings from Intel and AMD while also enhancing Nvidia’s footprint in the CPU market, an area where it has historically had less influence.

The CPUs leverage technology from Arm Holdings and were initially intended to work in tandem with Nvidia’s AI accelerators. However, this latest development indicates Nvidia’s broader ambitions for these processors, aiming to serve emerging applications such as running AI agents alongside traditional tasks like database management.

Ian Buck, general manager of Nvidia’s hyperscale and high-performance computing division, noted that the Grace CPUs have demonstrated significant efficiency, reportedly using “half the power” required for some common tasks. Further enhancements are anticipated with the next-generation Vera chips, which are currently being tested by Meta for select workloads. Early results from these tests have been described as “very promising.”

This agreement comes at a time when Meta is actively pursuing the development of its own AI chips and exploring additional partnerships, including discussions with Google regarding the potential use of its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) hardware. Nvidia did not disclose the financial details of this agreement, but the company is widely regarded as a leading supplier to Meta, which is believed to be one of its largest customers.

Although Nvidia does not provide specific revenue figures, analysts suggest that Meta and three other major clients collectively contribute to approximately 61% of Nvidia’s total revenue. The emphasis on this new arrangement signals Nvidia’s intent to maintain a strong relationship with Meta while also promoting the growing demand for its CPU technology.

As the landscape of artificial intelligence continues to evolve, Nvidia’s strategic moves reflect a commitment to innovation and market leadership. By expanding the applicability of its CPU offerings and solidifying partnerships with industry giants like Meta, Nvidia is positioning itself to meet the increasing demand for advanced computing solutions in a competitive environment.
