Plugable Technologies has unveiled its latest product, the TBT5-AI, an external GPU enclosure designed to facilitate local AI workloads on laptops. Officially released just days ago, the device is priced at $599.95 and is now available through Amazon and Plugable’s website. The TBT5-AI aims to leverage the high-speed capabilities of Thunderbolt 5, which supports data transfer rates of up to 80 Gbps bidirectionally, with the potential to boost throughput to 120 Gbps for certain applications.
The enclosure features a full-length PCIe x16 slot, allowing users to install desktop-class graphics cards, making it especially relevant for developers engaged in artificial intelligence projects. With an integrated 850-watt power supply, the TBT5-AI can power high-performance GPUs that were previously limited to desktop workstations. This capability significantly enhances the potential for external GPU hardware, pushing it closer to workstation-level performance.
Connectivity is a key focus of the TBT5-AI. In addition to the Thunderbolt 5 connection, the device offers up to 96 watts of charging power for connected laptops, as well as 2.5-gigabit Ethernet networking and multiple USB ports. Plugable’s chief technology officer, Bernie Thompson, noted that many engineers are increasingly interested in keeping model processing and data handling local, as concerns over cloud computing costs and data privacy grow. “Data privacy is not a feature but a mandate,” he said, highlighting the importance of these capabilities in sectors such as healthcare, financial services, and legal organizations.
The TBT5-AI also supports a range of local AI frameworks, including llama.cpp and Hugging Face models, as well as Nvidia’s NIM inference platform. This allows developers to run large language models directly on local hardware, bypassing the need to transmit workloads to cloud infrastructure, which can be both costly and less secure.
In anticipation of market demand, Plugable is preparing enterprise versions of the TBT5-AI, designated as TBT5-AI16, TBT5-AI32, and TBT5-AI96. These models will come bundled with graphics processors and will include a software environment known as Plugable Chat, described as an air-gapped AI orchestration platform tailored for regulated organizations. The company asserts that these forthcoming systems will help shift AI processing away from subscription-based cloud services, offering a locally controlled computing alternative.
The increasing interest in local AI inference is also evidenced by a broader trend within the tech industry, where developers are exploring the potential of running language models directly on personal hardware. As cloud costs continue to rise, the drive for efficient, cost-effective solutions in AI processing is likely to intensify. The introduction of the TBT5-AI aligns with this trend, providing an avenue for professionals to harness the power of desktop-class GPUs without the overhead of cloud-based solutions.
