Adobe has entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with Runway, announced on December 18, 2025, aimed at integrating Runway’s generative video technology within Adobe’s creative software ecosystem. This collaboration grants Adobe customers exclusive early access to Runway’s latest generative AI models, starting with Gen-4.5, which was launched simultaneously in the Adobe Firefly app and on Runway’s platform.
As part of the partnership, Adobe has been designated as Runway’s preferred API creativity partner. This status ensures that Adobe customers receive first access to Runway’s latest models upon release. Users of Firefly can generate video from text prompts with Gen-4.5, explore various visual directions and motion options, and then seamlessly transition to Firefly’s video editor to compile clips into completed productions.
The partnership positions Adobe’s tools—spanning Firefly, Premiere Pro, and After Effects—as the primary destination for AI-powered video creation aimed at professionals. Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s chief technology officer and senior vice president of digital media, noted that creators are turning to Adobe’s ecosystem “to imagine, craft and scale their stories across every screen.”
Runway’s Gen-4.5 is said to deliver superior motion quality, adherence to prompts, and visual fidelity compared to earlier versions. The model enables dynamic action sequences with temporal consistency across different generation modes, allowing creators to stage multi-element scenes with precise compositions and realistic physics, ensuring continuity in gestures and facial expressions across shots.
Commercial applications of this partnership extend beyond individual creators to include Hollywood studios, streaming platforms, advertising agencies, Fortune 500 brands, and global enterprises. Both companies plan to work directly with these organizations to develop new video capabilities that will be available exclusively in Adobe applications, with a focus on Adobe Firefly.
Adobe’s Firefly platform currently offers a range of generative AI models, positioning itself as the only platform where creators can access industry-leading models alongside AI-powered tools for video, audio, imaging, and design. Current partner models feature offerings from Black Forest Labs, ElevenLabs, Google, Luma AI, OpenAI, and Topaz Labs, in addition to Adobe’s own Firefly models.
Cristóbal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of Runway, emphasized that the partnership “puts our latest generative video technology in front of more storytellers, inside Adobe’s creative tools that are already the industry standard for many creators around the world.”
This collaboration comes at a time when video production workflows in the advertising and entertainment sectors are undergoing significant transformation. Research from the Interactive Advertising Bureau, released on July 15, 2025, highlighted that 86% of buyers are currently utilizing or planning to implement generative AI for video advertisement creation, projecting that such efforts will account for 40% of all advertisements by 2026.
In October 2025, Adobe expanded its GenStudio platform, introducing custom AI model capabilities through Firefly Foundry and integrating with major advertising platforms like Amazon Ads, Google Marketing Platform, Innovid, LinkedIn, and TikTok. According to Adobe, 99% of Fortune 100 companies have utilized AI in an Adobe application, while nearly 90% of the company’s top 50 enterprise accounts have adopted AI-first innovations, including GenStudio offerings.
The timing of the partnership reflects a broader industry momentum toward AI-powered creative production tools. For instance, Google launched Asset Studio on September 10, 2025, which allows advertisers to generate and edit advertising assets using AI, while Microsoft expanded its AI capabilities for image animation and video creation in November 2025.
Adobe has branded its approach to AI as the most creator-friendly in the industry, emphasizing that AI serves as a tool for human creativity rather than a replacement. Content created with any model within the Firefly app is not used to train generative AI models, regardless of the partner model selected by the creator.
The partnership grants Firefly Pro plan customers unlimited access to Gen-4.5 generations until December 22, 2025. After this promotional period concludes, standard usage limits will apply based on the subscription tier.
Gen-4.5’s technical capabilities cater to professional requirements for commercial video production. The model generates video clips that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows through Premiere Pro and After Effects, allowing creators full control over composition, pacing, and motion using text prompts, with the ability to refine outputs using Adobe’s established editing tools.
This collaboration underscores Adobe’s strategy of partnering with specialized AI technology companies rather than solely developing proprietary models, thereby providing customers access to cutting-edge generative capabilities while focusing on integrating these models into professional creative workflows. Adobe had previously launched Firefly’s video capabilities in February 2025, supporting 1080p resolution for video generation, with plans for expansion to 4K for professional production work.
The emphasis on professional video workflows sets this partnership apart from consumer-oriented AI video tools. While several platforms facilitate rapid video generation for social media, Adobe and Runway are addressing the production needs of major studios and premium content creators. The announcement highlights their collaboration with Hollywood studios and enterprise clients.
The partnership is part of a broader industry shift towards leveraging AI in video production. Lemonlight, for instance, launched Generative AI Commercials on October 1, delivering high-quality commercial content at significantly reduced costs and timelines. ITV also partnered with Magnite to launch the GenAI Ads Manager platform in October, automating advertisement creation for television and streaming distribution.
Runway’s generative video technology also finds utility in film production, visual effects, and pre-visualization workflows, benefiting from rapid generation capabilities. This partnership with Adobe strategically positions Runway’s models within professional production environments where integration with established editing and compositing tools is essential.
As Adobe continues to expand its AI partnerships, the scope of innovation is likely to grow. The collaboration with Runway represents a significant step towards establishing a more integrated approach to generative video technology, facilitating a smoother adoption process for creators familiar with industry-standard software.
