Google DeepMind Launches First AI Research Lab in Southeast Asia, Strengthening Regional Innovation

Google DeepMind opens its first AI research lab in Singapore, aiming to leverage regional talent and drive innovation while doubling its APAC team in just one year.

Google DeepMind has announced the establishment of its first artificial intelligence research lab in Singapore, marking a significant expansion in the Southeast Asia region. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to harnessing the region’s talent and innovation potential, according to an official news release.

Singapore’s favorable policies, robust talent pool, and ambitious digital transformation plans were cited as critical factors in this strategic decision. With over half of the world’s population residing in the Asia-Pacific region, Google DeepMind anticipates substantial growth opportunities in the coming years. The country’s National AI Strategy 2.0 and Smart Nation 2.0 vision further bolster its position as an AI hub, making it an ideal location for this new facility.

The opening of the lab follows a remarkable growth trajectory for Google DeepMind, with its APAC team doubling in size over the past year. The Singapore lab will comprise research scientists, software engineers, operations staff, and AI impact experts, all working to advance Google’s Gemini models and conduct frontier AI research tailored to the needs of the Asia-Pacific region.

Advancing AI Research and Collaboration

The Singapore team will collaborate closely with governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and leading academic institutions across the region. A key focus will be on ensuring linguistic and cultural inclusivity, especially concerning Asian languages—an essential aspect of developing AI systems that resonate with local populations.

Lila Ibrahim, Chief Operating Officer of Google DeepMind, emphasized the strategic importance of Singapore, stating, “Singapore’s forward-looking approach and unique position make it the ideal place for our new Google DeepMind AI research lab. We are here to harness the region’s exceptional talent, drive purposeful research, and build the essential partnerships to advance AI responsibly and deliver tangible, global impact.”

Jermaine Loy, Managing Director at Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB), expressed enthusiasm about the decision, noting that it would bolster the nation’s AI ecosystem. “We welcome Google DeepMind’s decision to establish its first research lab in Southeast Asia in Singapore—an important addition to Singapore’s efforts to build a hub for AI innovation across Asia Pacific,” he stated. This collaboration is expected to yield innovative solutions in critical areas such as healthcare, energy, and climate.

Sanjay Gupta, President of Google Asia Pacific, highlighted the significance of this new venture, remarking that it signals the growing importance of the region in the global AI landscape. He noted that Google has been part of Singapore’s growth story for nearly two decades, serving as the home for its Asia-Pacific headquarters.

Local Impact and Future Prospects

Dr. Leslie Teo from AI Singapore noted that the presence of Google DeepMind will facilitate the development of AI models that better represent the region’s diversity. “A Google DeepMind presence in Southeast Asia is a broader recognition of the region’s AI vibrancy, and the need for systems that account for cultural and linguistic contexts we operate in,” he stated, expressing excitement about leveraging the team’s expertise for building more representative AI tools.

Google DeepMind outlined several projects already underway in Singapore that demonstrate the utilization of its AI tools. Noteworthy examples include research collaborations with A*STAR and the National Neuroscience Institute, which employed AlphaFold to make significant discoveries related to Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, partnerships with agencies like GovTech, CSA, and IMDA have led to the creation of an AI agent sandbox for safe public sector testing.

Looking ahead, Google DeepMind aims to ensure that the benefits of AI extend to communities throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The new lab is expected to deepen collaborations and spearhead research addressing challenges in health, climate, energy, and public services, thereby solidifying Singapore’s role as an AI innovation hub.
