Google has retracted several of its artificial intelligence health summaries following an investigation that revealed they were providing inaccurate or misleading information. This decision comes on the heels of a report from The Guardian, which highlighted issues with various health-related AI Overview snapshots that use generative AI to summarize key medical information at the top of search results.
In one noted instance, when queried about the normal range for liver blood tests, the AI failed to incorporate critical context, neglecting to consider factors such as nationality, sex, ethnicity, or age of patients. Such oversights prompted experts to express concern that severely unwell individuals might misinterpret their results as normal, which could lead them to forgo necessary follow-up appointments.
As a result, Google has removed AI Overviews related to that specific question and similar queries regarding “what is the normal range for liver function tests.” With a market share exceeding 90 percent in the global search engine domain, Google emphasized that it regularly updates AI results when context is found to be lacking.
A company spokesperson stated: “We do not comment on individual removals within Search. In cases where AI Overviews miss some context, we work to make broad improvements, and we also take action under our policies where appropriate.” They added that an internal review by clinicians determined that, in many instances, the information remained accurate and was backed by reputable sources.
Vanessa Hebditch, director of communications and policy at the British Liver Trust, welcomed Google’s proactive measures but cautioned that the risks associated with using AI for critical health information persist. “This is excellent news, and we’re pleased to see the removal of the Google AI Overviews in these instances,” she noted. “However, if the question is asked in a different way, a potentially misleading AI Overview may still be given. We remain concerned that other AI-produced health information can be inaccurate and confusing.”
Despite the removals, AI Overviews continue to be generated for slightly varied queries such as “lft reference range” or “lft test reference range.” Google is currently assessing these new instances to ensure the accuracy of the information provided.
Hebditch elaborated on the complexity of interpreting liver function tests (LFT), stating that these tests comprise a series of different blood evaluations. Understanding the results involves more than a simple comparison of numbers. The AI Overviews present test results prominently, which may lead readers to overlook that the numbers displayed might not even correspond to their specific tests.
Furthermore, she warned that an individual could receive normal results from these tests while still having serious liver diseases that necessitate further medical attention. “This false reassurance could be very harmful,” Hebditch added, highlighting the potential dangers of relying solely on AI-generated health summaries.
The implications of these AI systems extend beyond immediate health concerns, touching on broader discussions about the reliability and responsibility of AI in healthcare. As technology continues to evolve, the necessity for stringent oversight in AI applications—especially in critical areas such as health—becomes increasingly crucial. Google’s recent actions serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance in the deployment of AI technologies, particularly those that can influence health outcomes.
