Liverpool City Region Seeks AI Experts for New Taskforce
AI thought leaders and innovators are being recruited to form a new taskforce aimed at guiding the responsible development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence in the Liverpool City Region. This initiative is designed to enhance various sectors, including healthcare, education, and industry, leveraging the region’s existing world-class AI infrastructure and expertise.
The volunteer advisory group will play a crucial role in shaping the City Region’s long-term AI strategy, ensuring that AI technologies are deployed ethically and effectively for the public good. This effort will support the UK’s first regional Chief AI Officer, Tiffany St James, in developing a roadmap that positions the Liverpool City Region as a leader in utilizing AI for societal benefit.
This taskforce marks a significant step in Mayor Steve Rotheram’s ambitions for AI, following the success of the region’s second AI Summit in October, which featured prominent speakers and highlighted local strengths in AI. Rotheram emphasized the goal of making the Liverpool City Region the home of “AI for Good,” aiming for innovation that enhances the lives of the region’s 1.6 million residents and creates opportunities for local businesses.
The Liverpool City Region is already home to several notable assets, including the Digital Innovation Facility, the Virtual Engineering Centre, and the Civic Data Cooperative, as well as the UK’s most powerful supercomputer dedicated to industrial research and development located at Sci-Tech Daresbury. With growing capabilities in quantum computing, the region is well-positioned to lead in the next generation of AI and data technologies.
The Combined Authority is now looking for volunteers with expertise in AI research, ethics, development, or real-world implementation to join the taskforce. Candidates with knowledge in key sectors such as health and social care, transport, and education are particularly encouraged to apply. Selected members will have a two-year commitment, meeting quarterly to develop a coordinated roadmap for AI adoption and innovation across various fields.
St James expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with skilled individuals who can drive better outcomes for residents through strategic AI application. She urged potential candidates to apply or share the opportunity widely, noting the importance of diverse disciplines for innovative solutions.
Expressions of Interest are open until 31 January 2026. Interested individuals can apply or seek further information via the Combined Authority’s AI & Data webpage or by emailing [email protected].
This initiative is part of a broader movement across the UK to harness AI technologies responsibly, highlighting the growing recognition of AI’s potential to address societal challenges. The Liverpool City Region’s proactive approach could serve as a model for other regions aiming to harness the benefits of AI while prioritizing ethical considerations and public welfare.
