India has emerged as the largest market for AI chatbots, with a surge in daily active users attributed to aggressive promotional strategies. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, daily active users of ChatGPT in India skyrocketed by 607% year-on-year, reaching 73 million as of last week—more than double the number seen in the U.S. Meanwhile, Gemini experienced a 15% increase in daily users following a promotional offer from Reliance Jio, climbing to 17 million compared to just three million in the U.S. This data underscores a significant shift in user engagement, solidifying India’s position as a key player in the AI chatbot landscape.
In a further demonstration of the competitive environment, Perplexity has also entered the Indian market by offering its Pro tool, normally priced at $200 annually, free for one year to Airtel customers. This initiative is expected to enhance user engagement, as India now accounts for over a third of Perplexity’s global daily active users, up from just 7% last year, according to Sensor Tower.
Analysts suggest that these strategic moves aim not only at user growth but also at leveraging India’s linguistic diversity to enrich AI training datasets. Experts have indicated that user interactions in India present a unique opportunity for AI systems to handle complex communication patterns, reinforcing the need for robust datasets that reflect this diversity.
The aggressive pricing strategy aligns with past initiatives by Reliance, led by Mukesh Ambani, which has previously partnered with Google’s Gemini. Since its launch in 2016, Reliance’s telecom arm has amassed a user base exceeding 500 million customers through offers that included months of free data and voice services. Previous collaborations, such as those with Disney for free cricket streaming, have further positioned Reliance as a formidable player in the Indian media landscape.
Current usage patterns indicate that ChatGPT holds the highest engagement level in India, with 46% of its monthly users accessing the app daily in November, compared to 20% for Perplexity and 14% for Gemini. This engagement metric highlights the competitive landscape among these platforms, as companies vie for user attention in a rapidly evolving market.
Looking forward, the expansion of these AI platforms in India may not only influence the local tech ecosystem but could also have broader implications for the global AI landscape. As these companies continue to refine their offerings and adapt to local user needs, the data generated could significantly contribute to the development of more sophisticated AI systems capable of navigating diverse communication styles. The ongoing competition among these AI services in India is likely to set a precedent for how AI technologies evolve and are implemented worldwide, emphasizing the importance of localized strategies in a global market.
