Elon Musk has reignited the debate surrounding artificial intelligence by sharing a short AI-generated video that features a digital likeness of actress Sydney Sweeney. The clip, approximately ten seconds long, showcases updates to xAI’s Grok Imagine text-to-video tool and quickly gained traction on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The responses have been mixed, with some users expressing admiration for the technology while others voiced concerns over its ethical implications.
The video depicts a digital version of Sweeney conversing with an AI-generated male character aboard a spaceship. In the exchange, she asks, “So let me get this straight. Grok videos are now 10 seconds, and the audio is greatly improved?” to which her counterpart replies, “Yeah, pretty much… Do you like it?” Subtle sound design enhances the scene, featuring the sounds of beeping LEDs and a low hum, underscoring Musk’s claim that Grok’s audio quality has significantly improved.
The video was produced from a prompt by user Alex Patrascu, who did not include Sweeney’s name in the final prompt, raising questions about how the AI modeled her likeness. This incident follows a previous controversy in which Musk shared an AI-generated clip poking fun at Sweeney’s physical appearance, which many users criticized as inappropriate. That earlier backlash may color public perception of this latest video, particularly as Musk again uses her likeness to demonstrate AI capabilities.
The renewed attention on the video has coincided with increasing scrutiny of Grok Imagine, which was launched in July 2025 and originally featured a “Spicy” mode that allowed users to create NSFW images. Since then, the tool has faced criticism for facilitating the production and distribution of nonconsensual sexually explicit material. California Attorney General Rob Bonta recently announced that his office has initiated an inquiry into Grok Imagine, citing “shocking” reports of non-consensual content generated by xAI and urging the organization to take immediate action.
In response to the growing concerns, X’s Safety account announced new restrictions aimed at geoblocking users in jurisdictions where such content is illegal from generating images of real people in revealing clothing through Grok. xAI is implementing similar measures within its app. Despite these restrictions, a subsequent CBS News investigation revealed that users could still manipulate images of real individuals using the tool, raising further questions about the effectiveness of these safeguards.
Internationally, regulators in Europe are also taking notice. The European Union has launched its own investigation to determine whether X has violated the Digital Services Act by inadequately managing the risks associated with the rollout of Grok’s functionalities. The European Commission stated, “The new investigation will assess whether the company properly assessed and mitigated risks associated with the deployment of Grok’s functionalities into X in the EU.”
As it stands, neither a representative for Sydney Sweeney nor a spokesperson for X has publicly commented on the recent developments, leaving questions about ethical boundaries in the use of AI-generated likenesses unresolved. This incident exemplifies the growing tension between technological innovation and the ethical considerations surrounding consent and representation, particularly in a landscape increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence.
The implications of Musk’s latest AI demonstration extend beyond the entertainment realm, reflecting broader societal concerns about the potential misuse of technology. As scrutiny mounts, both regulatory bodies and users will need to navigate the fine line between innovation and ethics in the evolving AI landscape.
