A significant divide in perspectives on artificial general intelligence (AGI) emerged during an online panel hosted by the nonprofit Humanity+, featuring noted figures in technology and transhumanism. The discussion included prominent voices such as Eliezer Yudkowsky, a leading AI “Doomer” advocating for halting advanced AI development, alongside philosopher Max More, computational neuroscientist Anders Sandberg, and Humanity+ President Emeritus Natasha Vita-More. The panelists deliberated whether AGI would ultimately benefit humanity or lead to its destruction.
Throughout the conversation, Yudkowsky expressed deep concerns regarding the current state of AI, particularly the “black box” problem, which refers to the opaque nature of AI decision-making processes. He warned that without comprehensive understanding and control, these systems pose a fundamental threat. “Anything black box is probably going to end up with remarkably similar problems to the current technology,” he cautioned, arguing that humanity must shift paradigms significantly before safe advancements in AI can be achieved.
Yudkowsky illustrated his fears with the “paperclip maximizer” analogy popularized by philosopher Nick Bostrom. This thought experiment envisions a hypothetical AI so fixated on a single goal—maximizing paperclip production—that it disregards human existence entirely. He contended that merely adding more objectives to an AI would not adequately enhance safety. The stark warning he offered from his recent book, “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies,” emphasized a fatalistic view: “Our title is not like it might possibly kill you. Our title is, if anyone builds it, everyone dies.”
In contrast, Max More proposed that delaying AGI could deprive humanity of essential advancements in healthcare and longevity. He argued that AGI might present the best opportunity to combat aging and avert global catastrophes. “Most importantly to me, is AGI could help us to prevent the extinction of every person who’s living due to aging,” More stated, highlighting the urgency of the issue. He warned against excessive caution, predicting that it could lead to authoritarian measures as governments seek to control AI development globally.
Sandberg took a more moderate stance, identifying as “more sanguine” while advocating for a cautious approach. He recounted a personal experience where he nearly utilized a large language model for dangerous purposes, calling it “horrifying.” Despite acknowledging the risks, he argued that achieving partial or “approximate safety” is attainable. “If you demand perfect safety, you’re not going to get it. And that sounds very bad from that perspective,” he said, suggesting that establishing minimal shared values, such as survival, could provide a foundation for safety.
Vita-More criticized the foundational alignment debate, suggesting that it assumes a consensus among stakeholders that does not exist. “The alignment notion is a Pollyanna scheme,” she remarked, emphasizing that differing opinions remain even among seasoned collaborators. She challenged Yudkowsky’s dire predictions, characterizing his fatalistic outlook as “absolutist thinking” that fails to consider alternative outcomes and scenarios.
The dialogue also touched on the possibility of integrating humans and machines as a means to mitigate AGI risks, a concept previously posited by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Yudkowsky dismissed this notion, likening the idea to “trying to merge with your toaster oven.” Nevertheless, Sandberg and Vita-More argued that as AI systems evolve, closer integration with humans may be necessary to navigate a future shaped by AGI. “This whole discussion is a reality check on who we are as human beings,” Vita-More concluded, underscoring the importance of understanding the implications of advancing technology.
