The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has initiated a foundational training program in Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy for its staff across all school sites. This effort, unveiled recently, signifies a crucial step in the district’s commitment to fostering future-ready learning environments.
The training encompassed essential concepts related to generative AI, addressing topics such as algorithmic bias, environmental impact, academic integrity, and data privacy. Rather than portraying AI tools as either wholly beneficial or detrimental, the district has adopted a balanced perspective aimed at promoting responsible usage among staff and students alike. “AI is a powerful tool that depends entirely on human input and responsible adoption and training,” the district remarked in a public statement.
As part of this initiative, the district’s Educational Technology (EdTech) team has also launched a dedicated Generative AI website. This platform features a variety of resources, policy updates, and guidance tailored for students, parents, and staff, enhancing the community’s understanding of AI technologies. The website can be accessed at https://www.smmusd.org/ai.
Building on the foundational training provided to staff, the EdTech team is set to introduce a student-facing pilot program at the high school level that will utilize Google Gemini. This controlled pilot aims to enable teachers and students to collaboratively explore generative AI as a learning assistant while ensuring adherence to academic integrity standards. Lesson plans will focus on instructing students on the responsible, safe, and creative use of these tools.
This pilot program will also integrate recommendations from the California Department of Education’s AI Guidance document, which was published in January 2026. The insights gained from this initiative are expected to inform the district’s long-term development of student AI policy and curriculum.
During the Spring 2026 semester, the EdTech team plans to present a study session detailing the progress of AI literacy to the SMMUSD Board of Education. Community members will have the opportunity to participate either in person or via Zoom, fostering an open dialogue about the integration of AI in education.
This comprehensive approach to AI literacy is reflective of broader trends in education, where districts are increasingly recognizing the need for students to be equipped with the skills necessary to navigate an evolving technological landscape. As generative AI continues to advance, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s proactive measures could serve as a model for other educational institutions aiming to integrate technology responsibly into their curricula.
