As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly integrates into human resources (HR) functions, companies are discovering that not all HR tasks are suitable for full automation. Instead, many startups are adopting a hybrid model that combines human expertise with AI capabilities. This approach allows for better compliance, streamlined HR processes, and the ability for staff to focus on more strategic issues. Three companies exemplifying this trend showcase the effectiveness of outsourced human/AI HR teams.
Hightouch, a data activation platform with approximately 350 employees, is experiencing rapid growth and relies on an HR-as-a-service team to enhance its HR capabilities without increasing headcount. Chelsea Williams, Head of People Operations, oversees employee experience post-recruitment and utilizes this service primarily for onboarding and offboarding, especially as the company hires up to 30 new employees each month across various regions. “There are multiple compliance steps for each new hire such as I-9 verifications,” explains Williams. The outsourced team manages these details, ensuring standardized processes and freeing Williams from approximately 20 hours of work each week that would otherwise require additional staff. Moreover, the team possesses specialized knowledge in complex HR issues, such as leaves of absence, which may not be feasible for a single full-time employee.
Similarly, Hyperbound, an AI sales platform, is preparing for significant headcount growth in 2026. According to Chief of Staff Mason Smith, the company’s partnership with an outsourced HR-as-a-service team allows for the automation of numerous HR functions, including onboarding. “When I started here, I was relieved to see that a partnership already existed to cover HR functions,” Smith recalls. This arrangement enables him to delegate onboarding and compliance tasks, saving him at least 5-10 hours weekly. As Hyperbound continues to expand, the time saved will become increasingly valuable.
At Alex AI, a company that helps enterprises with recruitment, operations lead Paige Omura emphasizes the operational benefits of having a hybrid human/AI HR team. This setup provides crucial support in compliance and benefits administration, while also addressing routine HR inquiries. “Our hybrid human/AI team is handling around 10 hours’ worth of HR work a week – work I would have been doing otherwise,” states Omura. This assistance is especially beneficial as Alex AI scales its workforce across multiple states. The HR-as-a-service team plays a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with state regulations, which could otherwise consume 20-30 hours to establish. With the company poised to add employees across five or more states in the fourth quarter of 2025, this support is vital for maintaining hiring momentum.
Despite the efficiencies gained through AI, the need for human oversight remains crucial for complex HR decisions that require nuanced judgment. Nonetheless, routine processes such as onboarding, compliance filings, and addressing employee questions are increasingly being streamlined through automation. This hybrid approach reflects a broader trend in the industry as companies look to balance technological advancements with the irreplaceable value of human insight in human resources.
