OpenAI Partners with Foxconn to Co-Develop AI Data Centre Hardware for US Manufacturing

OpenAI partners with Foxconn to co-develop advanced AI data center hardware in the US, aiming to enhance local manufacturing and boost supply chain reliability.

In a significant move for the AI infrastructure landscape, OpenAI has announced a collaboration with Hon Hai Technology Group, widely known as Foxconn, to enhance the manufacturing readiness of next-generation AI hardware in the United States. This partnership, disclosed on November 20, aims to meet the mounting demand for physical infrastructure that supports advanced AI models.

While the agreement currently does not entail specific purchase commitments, it grants OpenAI early access to evaluate new systems, with the option to purchase them later. The collaboration will focus on co-designing and developing multiple generations of AI data center racks in parallel, integrating OpenAI’s infrastructure roadmap with Foxconn’s engineering and manufacturing expertise.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “This effort represents a generational opportunity to reindustrialize America. We believe this work will strengthen US leadership and help ensure the benefits of AI are widely shared.” The initiative aims to enhance domestic sourcing, improve rack architecture for US manufacturing, and expand local testing and assembly, all of which are critical steps toward reinforcing the US AI supply chain and expediting the deployment of reliable systems.

In addition to the collaborative development of data center racks, Foxconn will manufacture essential components for AI data centers within the US, including cabling, networking, cooling, and power systems. This strategy is expected to bolster the construction of high-performance computing infrastructure, vital for processing and deploying advanced AI models.

Foxconn chairman Young Liu expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, noting, “As the world’s largest manufacturer of AI data servers, Foxconn is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s mission with trusted, scalable infrastructure.” This collaboration underscores a growing trend of integrating AI with robust manufacturing capabilities, a necessary step as data processing demands continue to escalate.

Previously, OpenAI had also entered into a multi-year strategic collaboration with Broadcom to co-develop and deploy 10 gigawatts of AI accelerators and networking systems. This marked a significant enhancement in OpenAI’s infrastructure capabilities, where OpenAI designs the accelerators and systems, while Broadcom supplies Ethernet and other connectivity solutions for large-scale implementation across OpenAI facilities and partner data centers. The deployment of the newly developed racks is anticipated to start in the second half of 2026 and finish by the end of 2029.

This collaboration between OpenAI and Foxconn is a crucial step in the broader context of AI infrastructure development. As AI technologies evolve and become more integral to various industries, the need for sophisticated and reliable hardware becomes increasingly critical. By fostering domestic manufacturing and leveraging advanced engineering capabilities, OpenAI and Foxconn are positioning themselves to meet the future demands of AI while contributing to the reindustrialization of America.

The strategic alignment of these two organizations not only highlights their commitment to advancing AI technology but also indicates a significant shift towards localizing production capabilities, which could have lasting implications for the US tech ecosystem and its competitive edge in the global market.
