Meta has begun mandating that top software engineers transfer to its newly established Applied AI Engineering (AAI) unit, abandoning an earlier policy that allowed for voluntary participation. This decision, detailed in an internal memo obtained by Reuters, marks a significant shift in the company’s approach as it intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence integration across its operations.
The AAI unit, led by Reality Labs VP Maher Saba, is charged with developing AI agents capable of automating substantial portions of Meta’s engineering tasks. Saba’s memo indicates that the company has collaborated with leadership from various departments to select engineers for transfer, emphasizing that these moves are non-negotiable. “AAI is one of the company’s highest priorities and we’re resourcing it by moving our strongest talent to address it. Therefore, the transfers aren’t optional,” Saba stated in response to inquiries from employees.
Initially launched in March with an open call for participation, the AAI unit has now pivoted to a more selective approach in staffing, reflecting a broader company strategy to prioritize AI development. Selected engineers are expected to be notified this week, with the unit’s mandate focused on building tools, evaluations, and data pipelines that will enable AI agents to write code, run tests, and ultimately deliver products with minimal human input.
Saba has envisioned a future where these AI agents significantly contribute to Meta’s engineering output, allowing human engineers to oversee processes rather than engage in them directly. This management structure is designed for efficiency, with teams potentially operating under ratios of up to 50 engineers per manager, thus streamlining the development process.
The AAI unit operates in conjunction with Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), a division spearheaded by former Scale AI chief Alexandr Wang. MSL recently launched its first model, Muse Spark, and is in the process of forming a specialized hardware team, led by engineer Rui Xu, known for his previous roles at ByteDance and Xiaomi. Wang has indicated that additional models are forthcoming, with some planned for open-source release.
The forced transfers to the AAI unit reflect a broader internal restructuring of Meta, which has recently undertaken significant layoffs, including approximately 700 positions across various departments such as Reality Labs and recruiting. Reports suggest that further layoffs could affect tens of thousands of employees as the company seeks to manage the financial implications of soaring AI infrastructure expenditures. The restructuring is part of a strategic pivot, with Reality Labs reorganizing teams into smaller, “AI-native pods” and designating engineers as “AI builders” with explicit targets for AI-assisted code output.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously indicated that 2026 is expected to be a pivotal year for AI’s transformative impact on Meta’s operations. The mandatory nature of the transfers hints at the seriousness of this commitment, underscoring the company’s intention to lead in the AI arena while streamlining its engineering capabilities for future demands.
