Microsoft is undergoing significant organizational changes aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, as announced by Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella and Mustafa Suleyman, Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, in internal communications to employees. The restructuring is designed to unify the company’s Copilot initiatives, reflecting its commitment to advancing productivity through AI.
Nadella articulated that a new era of productivity is being ushered in, as AI tools evolve from simple question-and-answer systems to performing complex, multi-step tasks that offer users more control. Recent product launches, such as Copilot Tasks and Copilot Cowork, exemplify this shift. The Copilot system will be integrated across both commercial and consumer segments, organized around four key pillars: Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 apps, and AI models. This integration aims to create a seamless and powerful user experience, thereby allowing organizations to focus on high-value work while maintaining necessary governance and security protocols.
To lead this unified effort, Jacob Andreou has been appointed as Executive Vice President of Copilot, overseeing the consumer and commercial experiences. Andreou previously served as CVP of Product and Growth at Microsoft AI, where he successfully promoted user-focused product development. His history at Snap, where he played a crucial role in the company’s scaling strategy, positions him well for this new challenge.
Simultaneously, the focus on AI model development has intensified. Nadella emphasized that advancements in this area are critical for Microsoft’s success in the coming decade. Suleyman will continue to spearhead efforts related to superintelligence, which is viewed as foundational to the company’s long-term goals. Nadella noted that Suleyman possesses the qualifications required to navigate the complexities of model science while ensuring that advancements remain aligned with human control and economic opportunity.
Supporting Andreou in the overall Copilot strategy will be Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna, who will oversee Microsoft 365 apps and the Copilot platform. The newly formed Copilot Leadership Team will work collaboratively to align the various teams, enabling a more coherent and competitive suite of AI-driven experiences.
Suleyman further elaborated on the structural changes, stating that the future of technology will be determined by frontier models and the products through which users experience them. He expressed a commitment to building superintelligence that positively impacts millions, emphasizing the need for robust models that can scale effectively. This ambition is supported by a comprehensive roadmap for frontier-scale computing, which Suleyman believes is essential for creating state-of-the-art models.
