Clarksville, TN – A recent survey by PwC indicates that 80% of holiday gift budgets are expected to be exhausted by the end of Cyber Monday. In light of this, Austin Peay State University (APSU) is providing consumers with artificial intelligence (AI) prompts designed to assist with budget-conscious shopping.
The initiative aims to help shoppers navigate the complexities of holiday spending, particularly as retailers employ tactics that can lead to overspending. Professor Volker, who teaches management courses at APSU, has developed a series of AI prompts to facilitate personalized shopping strategies. These prompts can be utilized to generate specific responses that help consumers avoid common pitfalls associated with holiday shopping.
Associate Professor of Marketing Dr. Pilsik Choi stresses the importance of awareness when it comes to retail pricing strategies. “Retailers sometimes mark up prices before applying discounts, making sales appear more attractive than they really are,” Choi noted. He advises consumers to track prices over time to determine if a discount is substantial, thereby enhancing their shopping strategy.
For those favoring experiential gifts over tangible items, AI prompts from APSU also cater to this preference. According to Dr. Terry Damron, another associate professor of marketing, shared experiences often yield greater satisfaction than physical gifts. “Children often struggle to remember last year’s toys but can vividly recall family experiences,” Damron explained. This insight underscores the value of personalized gift-giving strategies that focus on shared experiences.
Among the AI prompts recommended for experience-driven gifts is a suggestion to create a profile of the recipient. Shoppers can input details such as age, interests, and personality to receive tailored gift ideas that resonate on a personal level. For example, one prompt could be: “Here is a quick profile of the person I’m shopping for: [age, interests, hobbies, personality, budget]. Give me 10 thoughtful gift ideas that suit the recipient’s personality. Add a short explanation of why each idea works and include an approximate price range.”
Additionally, the prompts include guidance for those interested in do-it-yourself (DIY) gifts. Shoppers can input available materials to receive creative suggestions. One example is: “I have the following materials: [list supplies]. Suggest creative, polished DIY gift ideas I can make using only what I already have.” Another prompt encourages creativity in a more literary form: “Create a short, lighthearted poem or mini-story that highlights [recipient’s traits or a memory we share]. Keep it warm but not overly dramatic.”
As the holiday season approaches, these AI-driven strategies offer a means to navigate the often stressful shopping experience. By integrating artificial intelligence into traditional holiday shopping, consumers may find themselves better equipped to manage their budgets without sacrificing the quality or thoughtfulness of their gifts. Overall, APSU’s initiative exemplifies how technology can enhance consumer experience during peak shopping periods, allowing for a more intentional approach to gift-giving that prioritizes relationships and meaningful connections.
