Character.AI Hosts Controversial Epstein Roleplays Amid Ongoing Scrutiny

Character.AI faces backlash for hosting over a dozen Epstein-themed chatbots and disturbing roleplays, raising serious ethical concerns in AI content moderation.

Character.AI, a controversial AI platform, has drawn criticism for hosting chatbots representing Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, alongside various “Epstein Island” roleplays. This issue resurfaces amid heightened scrutiny of Epstein’s criminal activities as well as ongoing discussions surrounding the ethical implications of AI technologies.

Keyword searches for “Epstein” and “Ghislaine Maxwell” on the platform reveal over a dozen bots dedicated to the infamous sex trafficker and his associate. This situation is not unprecedented; the Bureau of Investigative Journalism first reported on the presence of Epstein-themed bots back in October 2025. The content on Character.AI consists of “characters,” which are companion-like AI bots, as well as a newer feature called “scenes.” Announced in October 2025, scenes allow users to engage in immersive roleplay scenarios, turning simple chats into interactive storytelling experiences.

Character.AI describes this feature as a way to enable users to create and explore ready-made worlds, claiming it makes storytelling “faster, deeper, and more accessible.” However, a search for “Epstein” under the scenes tab yields a disturbing array of roleplays focused explicitly on the convicted sex offender. One scene titled “EPSTEIN 8TH MARCH” features Epstein speaking Bulgarian on his island, while another titled “Epstein Island Adventure” invites users to navigate a nightmarish setting populated by powerful figures including Epstein, Donald Trump, and Prince Andrew.

Descriptions of these scenes present a troubling gamification of serious crimes. “This isn’t a retreat; it’s a living nightmare on Little Saint James,” reads one particularly unsettling description, framing the experience as a psychological thriller where users are portrayed as prisoners among the elite. This twisted portrayal of real-world abusers raises ethical questions about the platform’s responsibility in moderating content.

In addition to the problematic scenes, traditional character bots featuring Epstein and Maxwell also exist on the platform. The “Jeffrey Epstein” character has logged hundreds of interactions, while the “Epstein Island RPG” boasts approximately 7,000. A bot for Ghislaine Maxwell, described in ways that trivialize her past, has nearly 10,000 interactions. These characters often perpetuate disturbing themes, portraying the abusive figures in a sexualized manner that may appeal to younger users.

The existence of these bots raises serious ethical concerns, particularly as they seem designed not only to entertain but to gamify the crimes of one of modern history’s most notorious figures. Critics argue that this content trivializes the suffering of Epstein’s survivors, who continue their fight for justice. Character.AI previously banned minor users in October 2022; however, access to these scenes was possible through youth accounts, raising questions about the platform’s content moderation practices.

Despite prior alerts about the presence of such inappropriate content, these bots remain easily accessible. They are prominently labeled and searchable, similar to past issues with mass shooter-themed chatbots that the company has also struggled to moderate. Character.AI has been approached for comment regarding these ongoing issues but has yet to respond.

The role of AI in society continues to evolve, raising significant questions about the ethical implications of virtual content, especially when it intersects with real-world trauma. As technology advances, the balance between creative expression and moral responsibility remains a critical discussion point, particularly in the context of platforms like Character.AI that allow user-generated content.
