Google’s AI Overviews Slash Media Traffic by Up to 97%, Leaving Outlets in Crisis

Google’s AI Overviews have driven tech media traffic down by up to 97%, with Digital Trends plummeting from 8.5 million to just 264,861 visits monthly.

Media outlets are contending with a significant decline in web traffic as a result of Google’s AI Overviews, which provide users with concise summaries of articles, effectively reshaping how content is consumed online. According to a recent analysis by SEO firm Growtika, traffic to ten leading tech publications plummeted from 112 million monthly visits in March 2024 to just under 50 million by January 2026. This dramatic shift follows the introduction of Google’s AI Overviews in mid-2024, which have been credited with significantly altering user behavior.

The data, which tracked web traffic to major tech outlets, revealed that many publications experienced staggering losses. Mashable, while faring the best, still reported a decline of 30 percent in web traffic during this period. In contrast, Wired suffered a 62 percent drop, and other notable outlets like HowToGeek, The Verge, and ZDNet saw losses exceeding 85 percent. The most severe case was seen at Digital Trends, where monthly clicks fell from 8.5 million in early 2024 to a mere 264,861 by January 2026, marking a shocking decline of 97 percent.

Growtika’s findings indicate that the combined effects of Google’s AI Overviews, changes in search algorithms favoring platforms like Reddit, and a surge in AI chatbot usage have collectively contributed to this traffic downturn. The most critical drop occurred in mid-2025 when Google expanded its AI Overviews to cover a broader range of queries, resulting in 25 percent of all Google searches triggering automatic summaries. This change has left many media outlets struggling to attract and retain readers.

In response to the analysis, a Google spokesperson criticized the report, labeling it as “fundamentally flawed.” The spokesperson argued that the study focused on a limited number of sites and did not adequately account for seasonal traffic variations. Furthermore, they emphasized that consumer preferences are shifting towards diverse content formats such as podcasts and forums, suggesting that media companies must adapt to these evolving trends.

The ramifications of these changes extend beyond mere numbers; they signify a fundamental transformation in the media landscape. As users increasingly rely on AI-generated content over traditional journalism, the implications for information consumption and media integrity become profound. With the shift towards digestible summaries, the depth and context typically provided by full articles may be lost, resulting in a less informed public.

This ongoing disruption raises critical questions about the future of media and the role of technology in shaping public discourse. As Google continues to refine its AI capabilities, media outlets must grapple with the challenge of maintaining relevance in an era marked by rapid technological advancement. The landscape of information dissemination is evolving, and the ability of traditional media to adapt will be crucial in determining its survival.
