S Krishnan, India’s IT Secretary, emphasized the nation’s commitment to a human-centric and inclusive approach to artificial intelligence (AI) ahead of the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026. In an interview with PTI, he articulated that AI should serve as a positive catalyst for global economic growth, especially benefiting countries in the Global South.
Krishnan stated, “The key message that we want to send is that whatever happens with AI needs to be human-centric and inclusive. There needs to be a democratic access to AI resources, and it needs to be done in a way that people and humans are at the centre of this process.” This philosophy underscores India’s ambition to position itself as a leader in equitable growth within the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
As nations gear up for deeper AI integration across various sectors, India aims to serve as a voice for balanced development. Krishnan noted that the overarching goal is to ensure AI is genuinely inclusive, allowing the advantages of technological prosperity to reach all demographics.
The India AI Impact Summit 2026 is set to convene policymakers, industry leaders, and technology innovators, offering a critical platform for discussing AI governance, safety, and economic growth. Krishnan remarked that the summit is intended to facilitate a global dialogue on this transformative technology, which is poised to shape future economic landscapes.
“We need to look at it as a huge positive impetus to the overall economy, and the possibility of using AI, of leveraging this technology, to see growth across the world, including India, including the rest of the Global South,” Krishnan explained. He emphasized that the emphasis on inclusivity should facilitate a higher growth trajectory, ensuring prosperity is shared widely.
According to Krishnan, while investment opportunities and partnerships may arise from the summit, its primary objective is to deepen the global understanding of AI and deliberate on strategies to maximize its positive impact. “It is a summit to expand our understanding of AI. It’s a summit to expand how we believe AI will impact humankind,” he stated. “We need to make sure that the beneficial and positive impact of AI is expanded to the extent possible.”
The IT Secretary highlighted that the India AI mission supports the development of indigenous foundational models, which include various types of AI models such as large language models, multimodal models, and quantitative models. He mentioned that the Prime Minister recently engaged with twelve startups and research institutions working on these models, with the unveiling of some developments expected soon.
Krishnan pointed out that India’s strategy incorporates an “innovation-first” approach while remaining open to swift regulation as needed. “Wherever possible, existing laws and regulatory frameworks would be leveraged,” he stated, aligning with recommendations from the Principal Scientific Adviser-led AI governance group. He underscored that each country must tailor its approach to suit its unique circumstances, adding, “We will legislate when the need arises, and we stand ready to put together a law, if need be, at short notice.”
The summit is anticipated to showcase the advancements made by Indian companies and startups, as well as the depth of research and policymaking in the AI domain. Krishnan described the event as an excellent occasion for diverse stakeholders to converge and discuss pressing issues related to AI, which should culminate in valuable outcomes.
