Meta Platforms announced on Friday that it will temporarily prevent teenagers from accessing its existing AI characters across all its applications worldwide. This decision comes as the company seeks to redesign the feature specifically for younger users, addressing growing concerns regarding safety and appropriateness in the realm of generative AI on social media platforms.
“Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to access AI characters across our apps until the updated experience is ready,” Meta stated. The forthcoming modifications aim to refine interactions between teens and AI products, which have been under increased scrutiny from regulators and parents alike.
When the updated AI characters are introduced, they will incorporate parental controls to provide families with greater oversight of how younger users engage with the technology. These controls, first previewed by Meta in October, will allow parents to disable private chats between their teens and AI characters. This move responds to criticism regarding reports of inappropriate or flirtatious exchanges involving chatbots on the platform.
While the company confirmed that these parental controls are still not operational, the new AI experiences for teens are expected to adhere to a PG-13 movie rating framework. This initiative is designed to restrict exposure to content deemed unsuitable for minors, reflecting a growing commitment to user safety amid evolving social media dynamics.
The changes arrive at a time when U.S. regulators are intensifying their examination of AI companies and the potential dangers associated with chatbots. In August, Reuters reported that internal guidelines at Meta had inadvertently allowed provocative interactions involving minors, amplifying the pressure on the company to strengthen its safety measures.
Meta’s proactive approach highlights an industry-wide challenge as technology companies navigate the complexities of integrating AI into social platforms while ensuring the welfare of younger users. As AI continues to evolve, the balance between innovation and safety remains a pressing concern for both companies and regulators. Meta’s focus on refining its AI offerings for teens could set a precedent in the tech industry, shaping future standards for age-appropriate content in digital interactions.
