MariaDB Acquires GridGain to Enhance AI Infrastructure with Sub-Millisecond Performance

MariaDB acquires GridGain to integrate in-memory computing with its database, delivering sub-millisecond performance for next-gen AI applications.

MariaDB has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire GridGain Systems, the company behind the in-memory computing platform Apache Ignite. This strategic acquisition aims to merge MariaDB’s relational database capabilities with GridGain’s in-memory data grid technology, creating a robust infrastructure designed to deliver sub-millisecond data performance for the next generation of AI-driven enterprise applications.

The combined platform is positioned to meet the increasing infrastructure demands posed by what are termed agentic AI systems—autonomous agents capable of reasoning, planning, and executing tasks. Such systems require real-time access to vast datasets with minimal latency, a challenge that traditional disk-based architectures often fail to address effectively.

By integrating MariaDB’s transactional database with GridGain’s in-memory computing technology, the two companies plan to establish a unified platform capable of supporting transactional, analytical, and AI workloads simultaneously. This innovative stack aims to provide enterprises with the ability to process and analyze data in real time, all while ensuring durability, reliability, and enterprise-grade performance.

The acquisition also positions MariaDB as a viable open alternative to proprietary database ecosystems and the increasingly fragmented architectures offered by many hyperscale cloud providers. The integration will allow organizations to consolidate multiple data services into a single hybrid platform that can effectively support both AI applications and traditional workloads.

MariaDB’s existing client base includes numerous global enterprises and developers, providing a migration path from Oracle MySQL and other legacy systems. Following the acquisition, the company will continue to support key customers in sectors such as financial services, telecommunications, technology, and logistics, all of which depend on high-performance data infrastructure.

With the combined technology platform, enterprises will be better equipped to manage demanding real-time workloads for large-scale applications and AI systems. This move will also help simplify data architectures that are often spread across multiple platforms, reducing complexity.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, although the financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Rohit de Souza, CEO of MariaDB plc, emphasized the unprecedented demands that agentic workloads are placing on enterprise infrastructure. “The rise of agentic workloads has placed unprecedented demands on enterprise infrastructure, causing requirements to explode and requiring a level of scale and sub-millisecond latency that traditional systems simply weren’t built to handle. By uniting MariaDB’s platform with GridGain’s in-memory data grid, we are entering a new weight class,” he stated. De Souza highlighted the potential to offer a high-performance, scalable, open alternative to the rigid lock-in of Oracle and the complex architectures provided by hyperscalers.

Lalit Ahuja, CTO of GridGain Systems, echoed these sentiments, remarking that enterprises can no longer afford the latency associated with siloed data architectures. “With MariaDB and GridGain, enterprise customers will get a unified platform that provides them the best of both worlds, performance and scale without having to give up on durability. The combined technology stack will unlock one of the key enablers for agentic enterprises: high-performance and reliable data processing that powers the next generation of AI applications,” he stated.

This acquisition enables MariaDB to enhance its offerings in an increasingly competitive market, particularly as more businesses look to harness AI capabilities. As the demand for real-time data processing continues to grow, the integration of GridGain’s technology is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future landscape of enterprise data management.
