Microsoft has launched version 2 of its free online course, Generative AI for Beginners .NET, which is now based on .NET 10 following a comprehensive overhaul. This updated course aims to equip participants with the knowledge to understand and build generative AI applications, from foundational concepts to production-ready patterns.
The .NET team described the course as an ideal starting point for those looking to delve into generative AI. “This new version restructured the entire curriculum into five focused lessons with full explanations, rebuilt everything on .NET 10, and moved to Microsoft.Extensions.AI as the primary abstraction,” they explained.
Individuals who previously enrolled in the inaugural version will find that this iteration is entirely new. The curriculum consists of five distinct lessons: Introduction to Generative AI, Generative AI Techniques, AI Patterns and Applications, Agents with MAF (Microsoft Agent Framework), and Responsible AI. Each lesson is designed to provide deeper insights and improved code walkthroughs compared to its predecessor.
In keeping with the advancements of .NET 10, the course incorporates modern programming patterns such as dependency injection, middleware pipelines, and file-based applications. Notably, all file-based examples now utilize AzureCliCredential, which eliminates the need for developers to manage connection strings or API keys across multiple projects. The course also leverages the latest AI models available.
One of the most significant enhancements is the transition from Semantic Kernel to Microsoft.Extensions.AI (MEAI) for interacting with AI models. This change dramatically simplifies the code developers need to write, streamlining the process of integrating AI functionalities in applications.
The updated Generative AI for Beginners .NET course is now available in English, with translations offered in several languages, including Chinese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Japanese, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. This broad accessibility underscores Microsoft’s commitment to fostering AI literacy among a diverse global audience.
As the demand for generative AI skills continues to rise across various industries, Microsoft’s initiative may enhance the programming capabilities of many developers. By providing free educational resources that are current with the latest technological developments, the company positions itself as a key player in the growing AI education sector.
