Mitsotakis Signs AI Cooperation Agreement with Mistral AI to Boost Greek Tech Ecosystem

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis signs a landmark agreement with Mistral AI to enhance AI training and deployment, boosting Greece’s tech ecosystem and innovation potential.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, one of Europe’s prominent artificial intelligence startups, in Athens to discuss potential collaborations in AI development. The meeting aimed to explore the training of large language models within the European AI ecosystem, with a particular focus on enhancing the adaptation of these models to the Greek language.

During their discussions at the prime minister’s office, Mitsotakis and Mensch delved into strategies for exchanging know-how and emphasized the need for training Greek researchers and scientists in AI. Both leaders highlighted the importance of fostering European technological solutions, underscoring Greece’s capacity to make significant contributions thanks to its highly qualified workforce and burgeoning infrastructure, which includes the Pharos AI factory currently under construction and the Daidalos supercomputer.

The meeting culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Greek government and Mistral AI, focusing on the effective utilization of AI in public administration. This agreement is designed to foster the development of innovative digital solutions for citizens and to explore the application of AI in sectors where Greece holds comparative advantages, such as shipping. Additionally, the memorandum aims to enhance training opportunities for Greek students and graduates through specialized programs offered by Mistral.

Participating in the discussions from the Greek government were Dimitris Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance, Vassilis Karkatzounis, Special Secretary for AI and Data Governance, and Giannis Mastrogeorgiou, Special Secretary for Long-term Planning. Their presence at the meeting reflects the Greek government’s commitment to advancing AI initiatives and leveraging international partnerships to bolster the nation’s capabilities in this critical technology sector.

This collaboration comes at a time when European nations are increasingly recognizing the strategic importance of AI technology in driving economic growth and innovation. As countries compete to establish themselves as leaders in AI, Greece’s efforts to integrate AI solutions into public administration and other sectors may enhance its position in the broader European landscape. The partnership with Mistral AI not only signifies a step towards advancing local expertise but also positions Greece as a contributor to the development of AI technologies that could benefit the entire region.
