Perplexity has unveiled Perplexity Computer, an innovative AI system aimed at integrating multiple frontier models into a single, general-purpose digital worker capable of creating and executing comprehensive workflows. The introduction of this platform comes as AI models have grown increasingly capable yet specialized, leading to bottlenecks in the products that utilize them. By orchestrating various leading AI models into a coordinated system, Perplexity Computer seeks to eliminate these limitations and leverage the combined strengths of different models.
Operating through interfaces similar to those used by human users, Perplexity Computer is touted as the next evolution of AI systems. Unlike traditional chat interfaces that merely provide answers or agents that execute isolated tasks, this new system is designed to create and manage entire workflows that can extend over hours or even months. Users initiate the process by outlining desired outcomes, prompting the system to decompose the request into tasks and subtasks, subsequently generating sub-agents for execution.
These sub-agents are capable of performing a range of functions such as web research, document generation, data processing, and making API calls to connected services. The automation inherent in the system allows work to be coordinated asynchronously, granting users the ability to manage other responsibilities or run multiple instances concurrently. Each task operates within an isolated compute environment, utilizing a real filesystem, browser, and integrated tools for optimal execution.
In cases where the system encounters challenges, it has the capacity to generate additional sub-agents to address issues, whether that involves conducting supplementary research, coding applications, retrieving API keys, or escalating matters to the user when necessary. Perplexity describes this architecture as a safe and universally accessible mechanism for harnessing powerful AI without requiring localized setup.
The launch of Perplexity Computer aligns with the company’s broader mission to empower curiosity through highly accurate AI technologies. Previously, Perplexity introduced Comet, labeled as the first AI-native browser, along with the Comet Assistant, a personal AI agent. The company has also focused on enhancing deep research capabilities, persistent memory, and task management functionalities.
Perplexity Computer operates in a model-agnostic manner and is constructed around intelligent multi-model orchestration. As AI models continue to become more specialized, the company asserts that the most effective AI systems will be those capable of intelligently deploying multiple models across various subtasks. At its launch, Perplexity Computer utilizes Opus 4.6 as its core reasoning engine and orchestrates sub-agents using an array of models tailored for specific functions. These include Gemini for deep research and sub-agent creation, Nano Banana for image processing, Veo 3.1 for video tasks, Grok for lighter operations, and ChatGPT 5.2 for long-context recall and extensive searches.
The architecture is designed to evolve alongside advancements in AI models, allowing users to select specific models for particular subtasks according to their needs and token budgets. Perplexity highlighted a historical reference to the term “computer,” tracing it back to 18th-century mathematician Alexis Clairaut, who employed human “computers” to enhance predictions regarding Halley’s Comet. The company noted that while the term has transformed over time, it has consistently referenced the autonomous division of complex work with accuracy at its core.
Perplexity Computer is currently available to subscribers of Perplexity Max, with the rollout for Enterprise Max users expected in the near future. The company’s representatives emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, “The best AI models in the world are already capable of extraordinary work. What they’ve lacked is a system that can orchestrate capability across tasks, tools, and time. Until today.” With this new offering, Perplexity aims to redefine the potential of AI in workflow automation, promising a more efficient and integrated approach to digital tasks.
