Samsung is positioning its Bixby voice assistant as a formidable rival to Google Gemini by integrating the capabilities of Perplexity AI. A recent leak from users testing the One UI 8.5 beta reveals that Bixby version 4.0.50.4 can now send complex inquiries to Perplexity’s reasoning engine, akin to Apple’s use of ChatGPT for its Siri assistant. This development aims to provide users with comprehensive, research-backed responses rather than the basic web search results that have historically defined Bixby’s performance.
In a demonstration of this new functionality, a test user queried Bixby about the weather. In response, the assistant utilized Perplexity to deliver a weather forecast alongside practical guidance, such as advice on whether to carry an umbrella. This enhanced interaction is made possible through a card-style design that aligns with the visual updates introduced in One UI 8.5.
This update addresses a long-standing limitation of Bixby, which has often struggled with maintaining conversational context—much like Apple’s Siri. Traditionally, Bixby excelled in controlling device settings and managing smart home devices but lacked the depth in conversational AI that newer platforms offer. With the integration of Perplexity, Bixby can now “execute web-based and research-heavy, complex prompts in real time,” enhancing its utility in everyday tasks.
Earlier this year, reports indicated that Samsung was in discussions with Perplexity to potentially establish it as the default assistant on upcoming devices. During those discussions, the companies considered incorporating Perplexity into Samsung Internet and Bixby, in a strategic move to diminish reliance on Google services. Recently, Samsung has heavily leaned on Gemini for its primary AI functionalities, yet this new beta update signals a shift toward diversifying its AI partnerships as it approaches the anticipated launch of the Galaxy S26 series in early 2026.
As the competitive landscape for voice assistants evolves, Samsung’s collaboration with Perplexity exemplifies a broader trend among tech companies seeking to advance their artificial intelligence offerings. With consumer expectations climbing for more sophisticated and context-aware interactions, the success of such integrations could shape the future of how users engage with technology. Samsung’s push to enhance Bixby may not only uplift its market position but also push competitors to innovate further, ultimately benefiting the end user.
