Huawei Launches AI Pathology Solution Covering 90% of Cancer Cases in China

Huawei unveils an AI pathology model that addresses 90% of cancer cases in China, enhancing diagnostic efficiency and transforming healthcare delivery.

Chinese multinational technology group Huawei is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in healthcare, unveiling transformative solutions aimed at disrupting the industry crucial for socioeconomic development. With a significant presence in South Africa, where it offers solutions across various sectors including energy, banking, and mining, Huawei has launched its AI+ healthcare initiative domestically to leverage AI for enhancing medical research.

In collaboration with a hospital in Shanghai, Huawei has introduced a new pathology model designed to deliver comprehensive clinical pathology support for 19 prevalent cancer types, which collectively account for 90% of cancer cases in China each year. This initiative is part of Huawei’s broader strategy to harness AI in addressing critical healthcare challenges.

According to the company, “The healthcare and pathology industry faces challenges in data storage, data sharing, remote pathological diagnosis and regional pathology consultations.” To mitigate these issues, Huawei has rolled out its Digital Pathology Solution, which utilizes advanced technologies such as lossless data compression algorithms and multiprotocol interoperability, along with all-in-one systems and remote collaboration features.

“This solution ensures the full-lifecycle storage and quality management of digital pathology data and supports multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations and pathology education,” Huawei stated. The system enables access to over 1,000 pathological sections while reducing storage use by 45%, thereby significantly enhancing diagnostic efficiency, especially in processing large volumes of pathology sections.

William Zhang, president of Huawei’s healthcare business unit, emphasized the potential for these solutions to be replicated in South Africa. He noted, “The technology can be very helpful in South Africa and Africa by improving the healthcare conditions. It can also help to quickly upscale doctors so that they can teach technology better to their students,” during an event at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona this week.

In a notable expansion, HM Hospitals, one of Spain’s leading private healthcare providers, announced the launch of Huawei’s first smart healthcare solutions in Europe on Tuesday. The healthcare provider, which employs around 7,000 personnel, will implement Huawei’s Medical Technology Digitalisation (MTD) and Smart Hospital Campus solutions.

The MTD solution is designed to enhance healthcare through AI-assisted diagnosis and intelligent quality control, enabling more precise healthcare delivery as well as a hierarchical approach to diagnosis and treatment. South Africa’s private healthcare sector has already begun integrating AI into their operations. Last year, Netcare, one of the country’s largest private healthcare groups, announced plans to introduce medical-grade wearable devices aimed at monitoring patient vital statistics using AI.

Beyond its immediate healthcare applications, Huawei is also leveraging 5G and cloud technologies to facilitate cross-border telemedicine collaboration. This initiative addresses the scarcity of medical resources in remote areas, while the company has introduced its Smart Clinic Solution to enhance clinic operations through AI-powered core workflows, thereby improving efficiency and service quality.

As Huawei advances its AI healthcare initiatives, the company’s commitment to technological innovation could significantly reshape the healthcare landscape in emerging markets. The integration of AI solutions not only promises to enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities but also aims to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly in regions where resources are limited.
