The Foundation for American Innovation (FAI) is actively seeking a Research Fellow to explore the intersection of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence policy. Established in 2014, the nonprofit organization aims to foster innovation that supports a freer and more abundant future. Based in Washington, DC, this full-time position presents a unique opportunity for an individual passionate about enhancing the capabilities of FAI’s AI Policy team while contributing to significant policy discussions.
Reporting to the Director of Artificial Intelligence Policy, the Research Fellow will be responsible for original research, policy commentary, and organizing events aimed at engaging a diverse set of stakeholders—from policymakers to the general public. The fellow will play a crucial role in advancing discussions on media and technology, focusing specifically on the evolving landscape of AI and cybersecurity.
The responsibilities of the fellow include leading independent research initiatives, fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, and supporting programming for FAI fellowships and events. This encompasses everything from speaking on panels and curating expert speakers to teaching sessions that facilitate knowledge sharing. The role may also require periodic travel to major U.S. tech hubs to participate in FAI events.
Candidates may choose to specialize in various facets of cybersecurity and AI policy. Key areas of focus include securing critical infrastructure against cyber threats, promoting government AI adoption for national security, and protecting both commercial and government AI innovations through improved security measures. The role will also engage in standards development for high-security data centers and agentic AI, reflecting the organization’s commitment to addressing the rising complexities in technology governance.
The FAI is looking for energetic, motivated, and detail-oriented individuals who align with its mission of supporting a network of builders, hackers, and policy experts. Competitive applicants should possess a robust background in cybersecurity or cybersecurity policy, whether acquired through industry, academia, or government. The ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences is essential, as is the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.
In terms of benefits, FAI offers a comprehensive package including health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) match up to 6%, and a generous annual performance bonus. Additional perks include a $1,000 annual book credit, a monthly commuter benefit, and an unlimited vacation policy, along with a flexible work schedule in a hybrid office environment located in Union Market, Washington, DC.
The expected salary range for this position is between $100,000 and $130,000, depending on experience. The organization emphasizes an inclusive hiring process, welcoming applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or any other basis prohibited by law.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the work conducted by FAI is increasingly critical in shaping how technology intersects with governance. The Research Fellow will not only contribute to essential policy discussions but also play a role in developing actionable solutions that address pressing challenges in cybersecurity and AI. This position marks a significant step in advancing a more informed and secure technological future.
