Saudi Arabia Achieves AI Ambitions: 15 New Services by 2030 Under Vision 2030

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 targets 15 new AI services in universities, aiming to train 40% of the workforce in AI and become a global leader by 2030.

A significant evolution in higher education is in progress in Saudi Arabia as the Kingdom advances its Vision 2030 strategy. This roadmap emphasizes the pivotal role of universities and research institutions in fostering a knowledge-based economy, driving innovation, and equipping the future workforce for a rapidly changing global labor market.

According to Maged Fahmy, Vice President of Ellucian MEA, the Vision 2030 initiative is poised to reshape higher education by necessitating the digital capabilities that universities must develop to meet its ambitious goals. The strategy outlines a clear direction for reforming higher education in alignment with national economic and social priorities, focusing on growth and global leadership. The integration of advanced technologies like AI, data analytics, and digital learning is deemed essential to create a more agile and responsive educational sector, capable of fulfilling Saudi Arabia’s long-term ambitions.

Saudi universities are setting bold targets for 2030, with aspirations to elevate at least five institutions into the world’s top 200. As part of this endeavor, the Kingdom aims to establish itself as a hub for international students and experts, highlighted by initiatives such as “Study in Saudi”. This will necessitate a transition from traditional teaching models to more research-intensive, self-sustaining institutions that lead in AI innovation and development.

Four specific AI-related targets, outlined by the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), are set to dominate the educational sector in the forthcoming years. These include implementing a minimum of 15 AI services in Saudi universities, positioning the Kingdom among the top 15 nations globally in AI by 2030, training 40% of the relevant workforce in AI and data fundamentals, and developing over 20,000 local specialists in data and AI to drive the future economy.

Universities that modernize outdated systems and dismantle data silos will be better positioned to prepare for the future. This transformation lays the groundwork for creating AI-enabled campuses, equipping students with the necessary skills to emerge as the next generation of AI-savvy professionals.

The momentum for digital transformation is growing as more institutions within Saudi Arabia adopt new technologies and innovative practices to accelerate their progress. Global trends indicate that 93% of senior leaders in higher education expect to increase their use of AI within the next two years, underscoring the urgency of this shift.

For Saudi universities to make strides toward the objectives set forth in Vision 2030, embracing digital transition and AI adoption is vital. Ellucian, having supported numerous institutions throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in modernizing their systems and processes, is strategically positioned to assist in this transformative journey.

The Ellucian Student SaaS platform presents a strategic engine that universities can utilize to deploy powerful AI tools, enhance operations, and meet their specific key performance indicators. By leveraging AI, institutions can personalize student engagement and boost recruitment efforts, notably aligning with the “Study in Saudi” initiative, which targets the identification and recruitment of international talent efficiently.

Moreover, the platform’s capabilities allow for proactive student retention strategies, enabling advisors to identify at-risk students before they fall behind, thereby improving overall academic outcomes. The transition to automated systems also alleviates the administrative burden on staff, allowing them to focus on high-priority tasks that directly benefit student progress and achievement.

Furthermore, a fully integrated technology ecosystem is crucial as today’s students expect a university interface that rivals their favorite applications in terms of intuitiveness. By modernizing and integrating their technological frameworks, institutions can significantly enhance the student experience, ensuring that digital campuses operate seamlessly alongside their physical counterparts.

The ambitious vision for higher education set for 2030 presents an exciting challenge for Saudi Arabia’s universities. With the support of the Ellucian Student SaaS, institutions are equipped with an innovative, AI-ready digital infrastructure, paving the way for world-class learning experiences and preparing graduates for an AI-driven future.

Discover how Ellucian Student SaaS can assist Saudi Arabia’s universities in realizing the goals outlined in Vision 2030.
