Legal research startup Midpage has unveiled a new connection with the language model Claude, aimed at integrating general artificial intelligence capabilities with specialized legal tools. This development comes as Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has also announced its foray into legal technology by introducing plugins tailored for the legal sector, marking a significant step for large language model (LLM) companies.
Based in New York, Midpage stated that the integration will enhance the legal research and drafting processes within Claude’s desktop and web platforms. Users will now be able to provide Claude access to a dataset comprising case law and a citator, creating a more streamlined workflow. Midpage indicated that this initiative is largely a response to demand from customers, who have increasingly turned to general-purpose AI tools for legal tasks.
The connection will enable users to effectively tackle both simple and complex legal queries, generate initial drafts of memos and briefs, link case facts to Claude projects, review and cite-check briefs, and brainstorm legal strategies. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that law firms can utilize the best features from both Midpage and Claude without feeling compelled to choose one over the other.
Midpage emphasizes that this collaboration is a “best of both worlds” scenario, as Claude can conduct web searches to provide answers but is limited to accessing only a fraction of relevant case law. In particular, Midpage’s database offers reliable and comprehensive legal research capabilities that Claude alone might not achieve. The company explained that the Midpage connection equips Claude with tools for executing complex legal searches across an extensive, up-to-date case law dataset, enriched with proprietary metadata to confirm the current standing of legal cases.
To utilize this integration, users must maintain active subscriptions for both Midpage and Claude, specifically the Claude Pro, Claude Team, or Claude Enterprise plans. However, Anthropic clarified that this collaboration does not constitute an official partnership, indicating that while the systems are connected, they are distinct entities collaborating on a shared objective.
In an interview with Midpage CEO Otto von Zastrow, he reflected on the timing of this launch, stating that tools like Claude and ChatGPT are becoming increasingly prevalent in law firms, while traditional legal tech providers often lag behind in adaptability. He noted that Claude’s ecosystem of integrations—ranging from web searches to local file access—allows law firms to consolidate their operational tools into a single interface, which is crucial for modern legal practices.
When asked about the potential risk of client attrition to Claude, von Zastrow acknowledged that users currently navigate back to Midpage for case reading. Nonetheless, he expressed a preference for positioning Midpage as an essential complement to chat platforms rather than a complete replacement. This strategic approach aims to expedite growth while enhancing user utility.
On the subjects of data security and the phenomenon of “hallucinations,” or erroneous outputs that some AI models might generate, von Zastrow pointed out that integrating Midpage’s legal database significantly reduces the risk of such inaccuracies. He emphasized that users will benefit from access to genuine, citable, and well-organized case law, although he advised that results should still be reviewed, akin to any human-generated work product.
Both Midpage and Claude comply with SOC 2 standards, making them suitable for enterprise law firm use. In the context of their integration, Midpage does not access uploaded documents or the full content of interactions with Claude, although it does track the cases and searches performed, which are not used for model training or storage.
Looking ahead, von Zastrow confirmed that Midpage plans to extend similar functionalities to other generative AI platforms, including ChatGPT, to remain at the forefront of legal tech innovation. As the landscape of legal technology continues to evolve, the collaboration between Midpage and Claude signals a significant shift towards more integrated, AI-driven solutions for legal professionals.
