OpenAI Launches $100 ChatGPT Pro Plan to Compete with Anthropic’s Claude

OpenAI introduces a $100 monthly ChatGPT Pro plan, offering five times more Codex capabilities than its Plus plan, enhancing competition with Anthropic’s Claude.

OpenAI has unveiled a new subscription tier for its ChatGPT service, introducing a $100 per month Pro plan that bridges the gap between its existing $20 Plus plan and the higher-end $200 Pro plan. This new offering, which provides five times more Codex capabilities than the Plus option, is designed to compete directly with Anthropic’s $100 per month Claude alternative. “Compared with Claude Code, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar across paid tiers,” an OpenAI spokesperson stated in a communication with TechCrunch.

The distinction between OpenAI’s two Pro plans is noteworthy. While the $200 version offers quadruple the Codex features, both plans grant access to the same advanced tools and models, as indicated on OpenAI’s product page. To incentivize users to transition to this new tier, OpenAI is temporarily doubling the Codex allocation, allowing users to access ten times the resources provided by the Plus plan.

User demand for such a plan has been vocal, with numerous requests appearing in OpenAI’s developer community forums. In a post on X, OpenAI emphasized, “The Plus plan will continue to be the best offer at $20 for steady, day-to-day usage of Codex, and the new $100 Pro tier offers a more accessible upgrade path for heavier daily use.” This response highlights the company’s intent to cater to a wider range of users, particularly those who require enhanced capabilities without committing to the higher price point.

Since the release of GPT 5.2 late last year, alongside the introduction of GPT-5.3-Codex in February, OpenAI has significantly enhanced the speed and reasoning capabilities of Codex. These advancements have created a challenging landscape for developers, who must now weigh the benefits of ChatGPT against those of Claude Opus. However, the previous $200 monthly fee for ChatGPT had acted as a barrier for many potential users, leading OpenAI to hope that the new Pro plan will attract those hesitant to commit at the higher price.

The launch of this pricing strategy indicates OpenAI’s ongoing effort to adapt to market demands while striving to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The introduction of the $100 Pro plan demonstrates how the company is positioning itself to retain and expand its user base amid increasing competition from other AI developers.

As the AI market continues to mature, the varying subscription tiers may reflect broader trends in user preferences and usage patterns. OpenAI’s proactive approach in adjusting its offerings may set the tone for other companies in the sector, as they seek to balance affordability with advanced capabilities. Moving forward, how well this new pricing structure resonates with users will likely influence OpenAI’s strategy and innovation in the months to come.
