Google DeepMind has launched a new AI research laboratory in Singapore, aimed at enhancing collaborations with government, businesses, civil society, and academic institutions across the Asia Pacific region. The initiative reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to the Asia Pacific ecosystem, with the AI unit having more than doubled its team in the area over the past year.
In a blog post, COO Lila Ibrahim emphasized that the lab will further efforts to pioneer foundational research in linguistic and cultural inclusivity tailored for the region. She noted that a primary focus will be advancing the capabilities of Gemini, DeepMind’s latest AI model, and applying state-of-the-art models across various Google products. “We are focused on understanding how our technologies can be best built to serve the diverse needs of the Asia Pacific region,” Ibrahim stated.

Moreover, DeepMind has partnered with GovTech, the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, and the Infocomm Media Development Authority to create an AI agent sandbox. This sandbox serves as a testing ground for autonomous systems, aimed at enhancing public sector efficiency and service delivery.
