TikTok Launches $2M AI Literacy Fund and New Control Features for AI Content Management

TikTok invests $2M in an AI literacy fund and unveils new user controls for managing AI-generated content, enhancing transparency and user experience.

TikTok has announced significant advancements in managing AI-generated content on its platform, introducing new user controls and labeling technologies alongside a substantial investment in AI literacy education. These initiatives aim to enhance user experience while addressing growing concerns about the authenticity and safety of AI-generated materials.

Enhanced User Controls for Customized Feeds

In a move to empower users, TikTok will soon begin testing a feature allowing users to manage the presence of AI-generated content in their “For You” feeds. This control is integrated within the existing “Manage Topics” feature, which encompasses over ten categories such as Dance, Sports, and Food & Drinks. Users seeking a greater exposure to AI-generated historical content can increase its frequency, while those wishing to minimize its presence can easily adjust their settings. TikTok emphasizes that this feature is designed to tailor content preferences rather than completely eliminating AI-generated material from users’ feeds.

Innovative Invisible Watermarking Technology

To bolster its labeling system for AI-generated content, TikTok has introduced “invisible watermarking” technology. Previously, the platform required content creators to label realistic AI-generated videos, employing various detection methods, including proprietary detection models and C2PA Content Credentials technology. So far, these efforts have led to over 1.3 billion videos being labeled appropriately.

The new invisible watermarks are particularly important as they address a common issue within the industry: labels often get stripped away when content is reuploaded or edited across different platforms. By embedding these watermarks into content generated with tools like AI Editor Pro and content labeled with C2PA Content Credentials, TikTok aims to provide more reliable labeling and context regarding any modifications made to the content.

Investment in AI Literacy and Strategic Collaborations

In addition to technical improvements, TikTok is investing $2 million into an AI literacy fund aimed at fostering education around AI technologies. This fund will support organizations like GirlsWhoCode to create educational content that will be featured in users’ For You feeds, focusing on AI literacy and safety. The initiative includes contributions from over 20 experts in various fields across more than a dozen global markets, with plans for further expansion.

As part of its commitment to responsible AI practices, TikTok has also become a sponsor of the non-profit Partnership on AI and joins two steering committees focusing on the intersection of AI with Enterprise and Human Connection. The company has been a founding member of the Partnership on AI’s Framework for Responsible Practices for Synthetic Media since 2023, regularly sharing updates on its implementation.

Over the past year, TikTok has refined its labeling strategies by incorporating additional context about whether content was labeled through AI detection, creator labels, or TikTok AI tools. As the platform continues to develop features such as Smart Split and AI Outline, it also utilizes AI to enhance its trust and safety operations.

As TikTok expands its capabilities in managing AI-generated content, its dual focus on user agency and educational initiatives signals a proactive approach to addressing the complexities of AI in digital media. These efforts reflect the broader industry trend of seeking transparency and responsibility in the use of artificial intelligence.
