OpenAI has launched its latest AI model, GPT-5.5, for paid subscribers, just six weeks after introducing GPT-5.4. This rapid release cycle emphasizes the intense competition among leading AI labs for enterprise clients and illustrates the trend of continuous, incremental model improvements within the sector.
The announcement comes amid claims from OpenAI that it has 4 million active Codex users and 9 million paying business users of ChatGPT. The company also reported over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million subscribers, figures it hopes will counteract perceptions on social media that it has been losing ground to its competitor, Anthropic, in the enterprise market.
During a press briefing, OpenAI President Greg Brockman described GPT-5.5 as a “new class of intelligence” that represents a significant advancement towards more intuitive computing. He recognized the challenge users face in distinguishing between multiple model releases but asserted that the new model requires less guidance and is “way more intuitive to use.” Brockman illustrated this capability with an example of a math professor who created an algebraic geometry application from a single prompt in just 11 minutes using GPT-5.5 and Codex.
Efficiency is another key focus for this release. Brockman highlighted that GPT-5.5 operates as a “faster, sharper thinker for fewer tokens” compared to its predecessor, which translates to increased accessibility for businesses and consumers alike. For context, tokens are the basic units of data processed by large language models, roughly equivalent to a word and a half in written text, and they play a crucial role in the billing structure for many AI services.
The Bank of New York has been among the early adopters testing GPT-5.5, alongside models from competitors like Anthropic. Chief Information Officer Leigh-Ann Russell noted that the advancements in response quality and “impressive hallucination resistance” are particularly vital for a highly regulated institution such as theirs. “A bank needs to have very high accuracy, so this becomes critical, and we are seeing a step change with this model,” Russell stated. She emphasized that improved accuracy will facilitate the scaling of the bank’s over 220 AI use cases, thereby enhancing their service offerings.
As businesses increasingly look to integrate advanced AI models into their operations, OpenAI’s developments may play a pivotal role in reshaping how organizations approach computational tasks. Brockman maintains that these enhancements are foundational for the future of “agent computing at scale,” especially in fields like scientific research, where traditional intelligence bottlenecks often impede progress. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, the implications of these advancements could be profound, influencing not only enterprise efficiency but also broader applications across various industries.
