Notre Dame Secures $50.8 Million Grant for AI Ethics Initiative
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame has received a landmark $50.8 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to foster a faith-based ethical approach to artificial intelligence (AI). This funding marks the largest single award from a private foundation in the university’s history.
The grant will bolster the development of the DELTA Network, an ethical framework inspired by Christian principles, which stands for Dignity, Embodiment, Love, Transcendence, and Agency. This framework was first introduced at the inaugural Notre Dame Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing held in September.
In addition to the DELTA framework, the grant will enable Notre Dame to establish a network aimed at providing practical resources to help address the ethical challenges posed by rapid advancements in AI technology. The university emphasized that this framework is crafted to be accessible to people from all faith backgrounds, grounded in core principles and values from Christian traditions.
“Pope Leo XIV calls for us all to work to ensure that AI is ‘intelligent, relational and guided by love,’ reflecting the design of God the Creator,” said Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., president of the university. “As a Catholic university that seeks to promote human flourishing, Notre Dame is well-positioned to build bridges between religious leaders and educators, and those creating and using new technologies, so that they might together explore the moral and ethical questions associated with AI.”
Meghan Sullivan, the founding director of Notre Dame’s Institute for Ethics and the Common Good, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Here at Notre Dame, we’re committed to shaping public thought about how humans can flourish in an AI-driven world by drawing upon our Catholic and Christian tradition. Given the monumental impact that AI will have on our lives, this work is more vital than ever.”
As artificial intelligence continues to permeate various sectors, ethical considerations have become increasingly critical. The framework aims to navigate the complexities of technology’s influence on society, emphasizing a balanced approach that incorporates spiritual and ethical dimensions. By aligning the conversation around AI with values derived from faith, Notre Dame seeks to create a dialogue that resonates across diverse communities.
The initiative reflects a growing recognition among educational institutions of the need to intertwine technological advancement with ethical considerations. As AI technologies evolve, they present challenges not just in terms of functionality but also in their broader societal implications. This grant positions Notre Dame as a pivotal player in shaping how AI can be used responsibly.
The DELTA Network is expected to provide a variety of resources and frameworks designed to assist educators, policymakers, and technologists in addressing ethical dilemmas associated with AI. It aims to facilitate collaboration among stakeholders from different backgrounds to develop inclusive solutions that consider both human dignity and technological progress.
As this initiative unfolds, it underscores the importance of integrating ethical perspectives into the rapid development of AI. The outcome of the DELTA project may serve as a model for other institutions seeking to navigate the challenges of modern technology while remaining aligned with core human values.
The commitment to a faith-based approach in AI ethics is a significant development in the landscape of technological discourse, prompting further exploration of how such frameworks can influence future innovations. With the DELTA Network set to launch various programs, the university anticipates fostering a rich dialogue that bridges technology, ethics, and spirituality.
For those interested in following developments related to the DELTA initiative, the university encourages joining their mailing list to stay connected with ongoing efforts.
