OpenAI and Anthropic Double AI Usage Limits for Developers Over Holidays

OpenAI and Anthropic double usage limits on AI coding tools, with OpenAI’s Codex offering up to 2x capacity until January 2026 for developers.

OpenAI and Anthropic have announced temporary increases to usage limits on their AI coding tools, providing developers with enhanced capacity during the holiday period. This initiative, aimed at accommodating users who frequently hit their limits during busy work cycles, is part of a year-end effort by both companies to support their developer communities.

OpenAI has taken a significant step by resetting and doubling the usual rate limits for its Codex platform, an AI-powered coding agent. This temporary enhancement will remain in place until 1 January 2026. The announcement, shared on X by Thibault Sottiaux, a Member of Technical Staff at OpenAI, was characterized as a holiday thank you to users following months of active engagement and feedback.

Codex is designed to facilitate end-to-end software development, capable of generating and modifying code based on text prompts or images. It is accessible through various platforms, including the command line, ChatGPT, and development environments like Visual Studio Code and Cursor.

Anthropic has also introduced a similar initiative for its Claude AI platform. From 25 December to 31 December, individual subscribers on Pro and Max plans will receive double their standard usage limits across mobile, desktop, and web versions of the service. It is important to note that this offer applies only to individual subscribers, with Team and Enterprise plans excluded. Both existing users and new subscribers who join during this promotional window are eligible for the increased limits.

After the promotional period concludes, all accounts will revert to their standard usage allowances, based on subscription tiers. This temporary relaxation of limits is particularly significant, as AI providers have been closely managing usage caps and metering systems across their paid plans, which typically operate on rolling time windows or weekly thresholds.

The timing of these holiday offers reflects the growing demand from developers and power users who rely heavily on AI tools for their workflows. By increasing usage limits during peak periods, OpenAI and Anthropic aim to alleviate restrictions that users encounter when demand is at its highest. This strategic move underscores the companies’ recognition of the evolving landscape in AI development, where sustained usage can often lead to limits that hamper productivity.

As AI continues to reshape the software development landscape, initiatives like these highlight the importance of understanding user needs and providing flexibility during critical periods. The increased capacity during the holiday season not only serves as an incentive but also reinforces the companies’ commitment to supporting the developer community. Looking ahead, how these changes may influence user engagement and platform adoption remains to be seen, as both companies navigate a rapidly changing environment in the AI sector.
