Ohio Announces Model AI Policy for Education; Districts Required to Adopt by 2026

Ohio mandates all school districts adopt a customizable AI policy by July 1, 2026, to ensure ethical and responsible integration of AI in education.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce announced today the release of a model policy focused on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. This initiative aims to guide public, community, and STEM schools in Ohio as they navigate the integration of AI technologies into the educational landscape.

Under House Bill 96, all school districts in Ohio are required to adopt an AI policy by July 1, 2026. This model policy provides a customizable template for schools, allowing them to adapt it to local needs as they develop their own policies. According to a spokesperson from the department, the template is intended to help ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly within educational settings.

“Ohio’s AI in Education Model Policy demonstrates our commitment to preparing students to succeed in a technology-driven world that is increasingly being shaped by AI,” said Stephen Dackin, Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The model policy was developed in collaboration with Ohio’s AI in Education Coalition, emphasizing a collective effort to address the challenges and opportunities posed by the rapid advancement of AI technologies.

The policy outlines appropriate use of AI by both students and staff and promotes ethical practices, while establishing standards for data privacy and security. It is designed to be comprehensive, addressing various aspects of AI in education, including guidelines for integrating AI into curricula and evaluating third-party AI tools. The policy also aligns with existing regulations on academic integrity, bullying, and procurement.

In its push for responsible AI use, the Ohio Department of Education encourages districts across the state to either adopt the model policy or develop their own customized version. Resources for policy development, as well as additional guidance, are accessible on the department’s AI in Education webpage, allowing schools to take informed steps toward AI integration.

As AI continues to shape educational practices worldwide, Ohio’s initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for clear guidelines and ethical standards in the use of advanced technologies in classrooms. The move is seen as a proactive step in preparing students for a future where AI will play a crucial role in various sectors, fostering an environment where technology serves as an educational tool rather than a hindrance.
