Lucian Grainge Unveils UMG’s 2026 AI Strategy, Securing Artist Protections and Revenue Growth

Lucian Grainge reveals UMG’s 2026 AI strategy, securing artist protections and driving revenue growth through innovative partnerships with YouTube, Meta, and TikTok.

Universal Music Group (UMG) Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge has shared his annual New Year’s memo to staff, emphasizing the company’s evolving relationship with artificial intelligence (AI). In the memo, which was obtained by Billboard, Grainge outlines UMG’s initiatives over the past year to navigate the complexities of AI technology while protecting artists and their copyrights.

The memo highlights UMG’s extensive partnerships with prominent tech companies like YouTube, Meta, and TikTok, alongside collaborations with AI-focused companies such as Udio, BandLab, SoundLabs, KLAY Vision, Splice, and Stability AI. Grainge asserts that these steps have not only safeguarded the interests of artists and songwriters but also fostered a new wave of creative innovation in the music industry. “The substantial progress we made last year on multiple fronts makes me extremely optimistic about AI’s enormous positive potential in the years ahead,” he wrote.

As Grainge elaborates on his vision for the future, he expresses confidence in UMG’s AI strategy, which he believes is distinct from other approaches that either resist engagement with AI or adopt it without ethical considerations. He notes, “If we’ve learned anything over the prior decades, it’s that trying to smother emerging technology is futile… and as history has demonstrated, completely counterproductive.” Grainge’s stance underscores a commitment to innovation and adaptation in the face of technological evolution, while also emphasizing the need for responsible business models that respect and compensate artists fairly.

In addition to its AI initiatives, the memo reflects on UMG’s achievements in the past year, highlighting its dominance in various digital service provider (DSP) charts and its ongoing global expansion. Grainge pointed out UMG’s innovative efforts, including the Sound Therapy initiative with Apple Music, which aims to aid in sleep, as well as sustainability initiatives and support for communities impacted by disasters. He reiterated UMG’s commitment to its “Streaming 2.0” initiative, designed to improve streaming royalty frameworks and reduce the impact of irrelevant uploads on artists’ earnings.

Looking ahead, Grainge emphasized UMG’s continued focus on connecting with ‘superfans’ through retail stores launched in major cities and enhancing the overall music experience with emerging platforms. He also mentioned the pending acquisition of Downtown Music Holdings as a crucial step in expanding distribution and artist services.

Grainge’s memo encapsulates UMG’s dual focus on innovation through technology and unwavering support for artists. By navigating the challenges posed by AI while maintaining a commitment to ethical practices, UMG aims to shape the future of the music industry in a way that benefits both artists and fans alike. As the landscape of the music industry continues to evolve, UMG is positioning itself to harness the opportunities presented by both technological advancement and changing consumer behaviors.
