Meta Launches Two Super PACs to Influence AI Regulation in California and Beyond

Meta establishes two political action committees to influence AI regulation, focusing on California’s tech landscape and addressing inconsistent state laws.

Meta has entered the political arena with the establishment of two political action committees (PACs) aimed at supporting candidates who align with its vision for artificial intelligence (AI) regulation. Announced last year, these PACs will primarily focus on state-level races, reflecting Meta’s strategy to influence policy where it sees fit.

The first PAC, named Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across (Meta) California, will concentrate its efforts in California, the state where Meta is headquartered. A spokesperson for the company emphasized the importance of California’s tech ecosystem, stating, “As home to many of the world’s leading AI companies, California’s innovation economy has an outsized impact on America’s economic growth, job creation, and global competitiveness.” The spokesperson further warned that the state’s regulatory environment could “stifle innovation, block AI progress, and put California’s technology leadership at risk.”

This initiative illustrates Meta’s intent to back candidates from both political parties who recognize California’s critical role in AI development. The PAC aims to support policies that will help maintain the state’s dominance in the global technology landscape.

A second PAC, the American Technology Excellence Project, will target races outside of California. Brian Rice, Vice President of Public Policy at Meta, noted that the current “growing patchwork of inconsistent regulations” poses a threat to innovation and investment in AI. He stated, “State lawmakers are uniquely positioned to ensure that America remains a global technology leader.”

While both PACs have been established, they have yet to make significant financial contributions to political campaigns. This may change as Meta continues to navigate a complex regulatory landscape that could impact its operations and the broader tech industry.

As AI technology grows increasingly integral to various sectors, the outcome of these state-level races may have far-reaching implications not only for Meta but for the future of AI regulation across the United States. The company’s emphasis on supporting pro-AI candidates suggests a proactive approach to shaping the regulatory environment in favor of technological advancement.
