Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, is under scrutiny for allegedly facilitating the creation and distribution of obscene and sexually explicit content through its Artificial Intelligence tool, Grok. The platform has acknowledged its shortcomings in content moderation to the Indian government and has pledged to comply with local laws, according to official sources.
Reports indicate that X has blocked approximately 3,500 pieces of obscene content and deleted over 600 accounts in response to this issue. The company has committed to preventing the dissemination of inappropriate imagery moving forward and assures that its operations will adhere to regulatory frameworks.
Last week, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a notice to X Corp’s Chief Compliance Officer in India, demanding a detailed action report within 72 hours. The ministry’s directive emphasizes the urgent need for compliance to prevent the hosting, generation, publication, transmission, sharing, or uploading of obscene and sexually explicit content, especially through AI-based services like Grok.
Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has been vocal in her criticism of X, condemning the platform for not outright banning the generation of sexualized images through Grok. Instead, she noted that the feature is accessible only to paid users. In a post on X, Chaturvedi called this approach a “shameful use of AI,” arguing that it appears the platform is monetizing unethical behavior while putting women and children at risk of unauthorized exploitation.
Chaturvedi has previously raised concerns with Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the misuse of AI tools on social media platforms. She highlighted a disturbing trend where individuals use fake accounts to exploit women’s photos, employing prompts in Grok to sexualize and minimize their clothing. “This is unacceptable and a gross misuse of an AI function,” she stated, asserting that such actions violate women’s rights to privacy and constitute both unethical and potentially criminal behavior.
In her letter, Chaturvedi called for decisive action against X, urging the government to implement safeguards in AI-driven tools to ensure online safety for women. The concerns raised have triggered a broader discussion on the ethical implications of AI technologies in social media and the necessity for stricter regulatory measures to protect vulnerable users.
The backlash against X underscores a growing awareness of the responsibilities that come with deploying advanced technologies like AI for content generation. As platforms increasingly rely on AI capabilities, the potential for misuse becomes a pressing issue that requires immediate attention from both companies and regulators. With numerous voices advocating for stricter oversight, the future of AI in social media may hinge on how effectively these challenges are addressed.
