Manik Gupta, the former Corporate Vice President at Microsoft responsible for product, data science, and growth at Microsoft Teams, has departed the company after more than four years of service. This transition coincides with the collaboration platform’s remarkable growth, having scaled to more than 320 million users globally during his tenure.
Gupta announced his decision in a post on LinkedIn, citing the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) and his ambitions to explore new opportunities. He reflected on his experience building Teams into what he termed a “category-defining product,” emphasizing the blend of consumer product thinking with the complexities inherent in enterprise-scale systems.
In his statement, Gupta expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to a product that supports a diverse range of users, from large corporations to everyday consumers and developers. “It has been the privilege to help build a category-defining product that serves over 320 million people,” he wrote, highlighting the insights and relationships he gained during his time at Microsoft.
Gupta’s departure is particularly timely, as he noted a significant shift in the AI landscape, describing the current moment as a major platform transition rather than mere incremental changes in technology. He stated, “With AI, we are in the early innings of a major platform shift,” underscoring the importance of adapting to this evolving environment.
He articulated his desire to reassess the landscape of meaningful product work, especially as AI systems transition from experimental models to essential tools in daily operations. “I’m convinced that the hardest and most interesting work in AI now lies in turning powerful models into products people can rely on every day,” he commented, emphasizing the challenges ahead in AI product development.
As he embarks on this new chapter, Gupta acknowledged the leadership transition occurring within Microsoft Teams, congratulating Russell Dicker and Sumi Singh on their new roles overseeing the product. He expressed appreciation for the support he received from Microsoft leadership throughout his time with the company and indicated his intention to remain engaged with the tech community focused on the future of AI.
Gupta concluded his message with a sense of optimism about the future, stating, “I’m excited to spend this next chapter exploring exactly where that leads.” As the AI sector continues to evolve and expand, professionals like Gupta are poised to navigate its complexities, potentially influencing how AI integrates into everyday productivity tools.
