OpenAI Secures $10B Deal with Cerebras for 750 MW of AI Computing Power

OpenAI inks a landmark $10B deal with Cerebras for 750 MW of advanced computing power to enhance AI capabilities by 2028.

OpenAI has entered into a significant partnership with AI chipmaker Cerebras, agreeing to purchase up to 750 megawatts of computing power over the next three years. Announced on January 14, the deal is projected to exceed US$10 billion and aims to bolster the capabilities of ChatGPT and other AI services.

Cerebras will supply cloud services powered by its wafer-scale chips, which are engineered to execute large AI models more efficiently than traditional GPUs. OpenAI intends to utilize this substantial capacity primarily for inference and reasoning tasks that demand high computational power.

To facilitate this agreement, Cerebras will either build or lease data centers equipped with its custom hardware, with computing capacity expected to come online in stages through 2028. OpenAI has indicated that this partnership will enhance the speed and responsiveness of its AI systems, especially as user demand escalates.

This deal holds particular significance for Cerebras as it prepares for a renewed attempt at a public listing. Following a postponed IPO in 2025, expanding its customer base beyond major stakeholders like UAE-based G42 could fortify its financial standing ahead of a potential flotation in 2026.

The agreement underlines the intensifying competition among AI firms to secure substantial computing resources, reflecting a wider trend of increasing investment in AI infrastructure. Nevertheless, some analysts caution that the soaring valuations and substantial expenditures could echo the dynamics of past technology bubbles.

As AI continues to evolve rapidly, partnerships like the one between OpenAI and Cerebras are likely to shape the future landscape of technology and innovation. The demand for advanced computing resources is set to escalate, driving further collaborations and investments in this critical sector.
