Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Motif Technologies has officially announced its intention to challenge the government’s re-publication of the “Independent Artificial Intelligence (AI) Foundation Model Project.” The company revealed its plans on the 20th, signaling its active participation in an additional public offering of its proprietary AI foundation model.
The independent AI foundation model project aims to develop a leading global AI source and has narrowed its candidates down to three out of five companies: Upstage, LG AI Research Institute, and SK Telecom. This selection followed the announcement of the first evaluation results on the 15th, where two teams were eliminated under unusual circumstances. In response, the government announced it would hold an additional contest to fill one team position.
Motif Technologies, which has demonstrated its technological capabilities with the launch of its large language model (LLM) “Motif 12.7B” in November last year, has been recognized by Artificial Analytics, a global AI performance evaluation agency, as a notable contender. Ryu Je-myung, the second vice minister of science and technology information and communication, cited Motif Technologies as an example of excellence in global performance.
The company asserts that its model embodies pure Korean technology, having managed the entire process from model construction to data learning internally. Notably, Motif has developed and implemented “group-specific differential attention (GDA) technology,” distinguishing its approach from existing transformer structures. This innovation highlights the company’s commitment to independence—a critical criterion for the project.
Motif Technologies is not new to competitive AI projects. It previously teamed up with AI infrastructure companies and Samil Accounting Corporation for the initial public offering of the project last year. Moving forward, it is expected that they will explore forming a consortium with additional companies beyond the current participants.
An official from Motif Technologies emphasized, “It is the only startup in Korea with experience in developing both high-performance LLM and large multi-modal models (LMM) as foundation models.” This assertion sets the company apart in a rapidly evolving landscape where AI capabilities are increasingly essential for both innovation and competitive advantage.
This development comes at a time when the demand for refined AI solutions is surging globally. With growing investments and advancements in the field, Motif Technologies’ participation in the re-opened project could be pivotal, not only for its own growth but also for the advancement of AI technology in South Korea. As the landscape continues to shift, the outcomes of this project may influence the direction of AI research and development, highlighting the importance of local startups in an increasingly competitive market.
