Arizona State U. Launches AI Challenge: Students Develop Tools to Transform Campus Life

Arizona State University launches the AI Acceleration Student Innovation Challenge, empowering 16 students to develop transformative AI tools for campus life.

The AI Acceleration Student Innovation Challenge, launched in January 2026, has attracted the participation of 16 students eager to share their early concepts in artificial intelligence. This initiative invites students to collaborate with experts from the AI Acceleration team, providing mentorship, resources, and platforms to develop and showcase their innovative ideas.

Lev Gonick, Enterprise CIO at Arizona State University (ASU), expressed his enthusiasm on LinkedIn, stating, “This is ASU at its best. Learning is not a spectator sport. This pitch event is putting platforms, tools, and technical support in the hands of this inspiring collection of students.” Over a span of three weeks, the participants will form teams to refine their projects into prototypes, which they will then present to the AI Acceleration leadership team before moving up the chain to Gonick.

Among the projects under development is a guided study tool named Study Buddy, designed to streamline students’ preparation processes through the Canvas platform. The tool aims to reduce the hours spent on study preparation, allowing students to allocate more time to actual learning.

Another group is focused on creating a mental health platform that utilizes AI insights to assess student needs at an earlier stage than current self-referral methods allow. This proactive approach seeks to engage students before they recognize the necessity for intervention.

Additional initiatives include an AI-powered launchpad for student entrepreneurs and a new social engagement platform intended to enhance both academic performance and campus life. These projects reflect a growing trend in educational institutions to leverage technology for improved student support.

Abang Faith Timoh, Product Manager at ASU, highlighted the importance of this new cohort of students, noting, “This is a new group of students that started in June of 2025, and seeing them progress over time has really been so amazing. I’m so excited to see how they’re going to build their ideas into fruition and see how this can shape the future of the next project our team is going to work on.”

The AI Acceleration Student Innovation Challenge not only aims to foster creativity among students but also positions ASU as a leader in integrating technology within education. As universities increasingly embrace artificial intelligence, the outcomes of these student projects may pave the way for further advancements in academic support systems and holistic student engagement.
