OpenAI Launches Prism, a Free AI Tool for Scientific Research Using GPT-5.2

OpenAI launches Prism, a free AI workspace for scientists using GPT-5.2, enhancing collaboration and productivity in research with advanced features like LaTeX support.

OpenAI has officially launched Prism, a new free AI-powered workspace tailored for scientists and academic professionals. This tool, based on the latest GPT-5.2 model, combines article writing, citation generation, and data visualization into a unified professional interface, as reported by Bloomberg.

Prism operates as a cloud-based editor with native LaTeX support, a formatting standard prevalent among scientific publications. Researchers utilizing the GPT-5.2 model can edit text and convert handwritten diagrams or whiteboard sketches into high-quality digital graphics suitable for publication. Additionally, the AI component assists users in rapidly identifying relevant literature on specific topics and automatically generating comprehensive lists of sources.

Kevin Weil, Vice President at OpenAI, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “I think 2026 will be to AI and science what 2025 was to AI and software development.” His remarks highlight an anticipated surge in scientific inquiries through platforms like ChatGPT.

The development of Prism was facilitated by the acquisition and redesign of the Crixet platform. This innovative product allows an unlimited number of researchers to collaborate on a single project simultaneously, thereby simplifying international scientific cooperation. Despite the advanced capabilities of Prism, OpenAI underscores the necessity of human oversight, advising users to verify the accuracy of generated data and references.

Currently, Prism is available for free to all individual ChatGPT users. OpenAI plans to expand access to educational institutions and corporate clients through specialized Enterprise and Education packages in the near future. As the demand for AI tools in research continues to grow, Prism aims to enhance productivity and collaboration in academic settings.

The launch of Prism comes at a time when the integration of AI in scientific research is becoming increasingly crucial. With tools like Prism, researchers can streamline their workflows and focus more on innovation and discovery. The influx of AI capabilities into academia reflects a broader trend towards the adoption of advanced technologies across various fields, positioning AI not just as a tool but as a partner in scientific exploration.
